Actually - I would love to see what people said (not sure forums like this were as popular/invented back then) when the 996 was first unveiled back in '97/98

Willing to bet almost the same reaction - It's amazing how quickly you get used to something that doesn't take at 1st..

Says everything about the 'new' Motor Show then ...and about Porsche.

Whatever people say about the 911 - and they are superb cars - I have to say I'm dissapointed with the appearance of the 997. I actually prefer the 996 - inside and out, although I accept there may be a performance advantage with the new car. The interior appears more "modern" but has lost it's character. Weideking reckoned he could extend the life of the current 911 with a facelift. I think he's missed a big opportunity.

Seen some newer pictures from a mate and it still looks...JUST LIKE A 996.

I was hoping I would have grown to like this more by now,(if anyone read my other post you would know why I don't like it), but it still isn't really changing what I thought before.
Evoloution over revoloution?...Sorry Porsche, still not convinced.

The only thing that matters as far as Porsche are concerned is that there are plenty of orders for the 997 already. It won't interest them whether or not enthusiasts like it. Nowadays they are in the business of selling as many cars as possible, even if that means Cayenne or 4 door or whetever else they can think of. Most new Porsche buyers are not car enthusiasts, they are looking for car park prestige. Personally, I think the 997 is a step forward from the dumpy frumpy 996, but I don't think I'll be buying another Porsche, the way things are heading.

have you ever driven a GT3????

No Peter, I haven't, although I had the opportunity to be driven in several 996 GT3s Mk1 on various french circuits.
From the driver's seat I therefore can't comment on how it feels, but from the passenger seat it always felt almost as sedate and boring as watching an episode of German TV series Inspector Derrick.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Derrick and Harry's adventures, however boring efficiency is certainly not what I would be looking for in a £60k plus track car.

Thom,

I am interested to know what car you would have considered more exciting from the passenger seat.

FWIW, I once got back into my own slightly tweaked 996 C2 after a 25 minute blast in a GT3, and thought all the controls had turned to jelly. Everything: clutch, gearbox, steering, suspension, the whole lot.

I am reminded of that drive every time I go karting and then have to drive home wondering whether my car felt like this before the karting...

Anything "unreliable" that's built in the UK

Am I the only one who things the 996 is one of the most gorgeous 911 models ever produced? At first I disliked it... but its grown on me... For some reason I think the 996 Turbo is the sexiest car on earth. I'm sure I'll feel the same way about the new one after I get used to it (and see it in turbo form).

As for Porsche being interesting in selling vehicles... at least you know they'll be around for a long, long time.

I think in certain guises, the 996 is..

namely the non standard.

I love the GT2 look, Esp Silver, with that gorgeous Black Nose Stripe, followed by the GT3 look, and finally the Aggressive Turbo Aerokit.

But thats why we have options boxes

I think once people start seeing the 997 in the flesh (inside and out) they will have a better idea if they like it not. I think photo's can sometimes be misleading, especially since they are from angles and perspectives that no-one really gets to see in real life (unless you are in a helicopter or manage to be run over by one of them).

I did think initially, though, that the shape from the photo's wasn't great, but the more I see them the better they get. The headlights are going to be more porsche like and who cares if their shape is like the beetle's? It's the classic porsche shape and so they shouldn't not use them simply because the beetle uses that shape too. The curved shape of the bonnet front line though, now that's a different story...

Where did this sotry about it being in production for only two years come from?

Its NOT a facelift 996, only 20% of the engine components are carried over, and only the roof from the 996 is the same.

Cannot believe it will only be available for two years though. Thats financial suicide.
