Hello from abroad everyone!

I am currently considering wading into 930 ownership.
Currently looking at a 1974 porsche which has been used for a 930 turbo convertion. Owner is asking 20 grand, which is quite far below what he has spent on it.
The car is completely rebuilt into a 930 turbo with Turbo chassis, Turbo engine and brakes.
The engine is brand new and only has 200 miles since assembly.. Bodywise the car has been picked down to molecules and "sandblown" before brand new paint. Brand new Recaro seats.. Only thing that needs to be done is fine-mapping of the engine as well as connecting the wiring on the electric seats...

So my question is: Should I look for an original car or is this a good deal seing as everything is brand new?

Hi, and welcome to PH!
I wouldn't go for it. After all, this is just a modded 911. Why would anyone put all the effort and money on a car to sell it well below? Why not buy a 930 in the first place? I would treat that car as a 911 that has not been assembled by factory standards, and has many potential pitfalls.

Good advice. I dunno, I guess part of the attraction is that everything is brand new, polished rubbed and sand-blown before paint.
The guys who have built it are quite well reputed..

3,3l engine - 370 bhp appearently. Ah well.

Just sold an 89 model 5 speed for 40k low miles (5 speeds demand premium)
Like all 911's supply and demand commands prices, and nice 930's are relatively rare so you wouldn't lose money. That said they also have a small audience come sale time as they are not everybody's cup of tea

Who are the best 930 turbo blokes in the UK these days? Just a short drive up to calais anyway...

I`d be looking at SENSIBLE upgrades if I found the right car - what kind of reliable BHP can you expect for daily driving?
Not looking at JBL930 550 bhp levels where the engine melts every year and you spend another 20 grand on the car - lol!

From what I can see, the attention to detail doesn't look great on the car above... The greying front rubber strip on the bumper, bits hanging out from under the dashboard, the wheels look like they need a refurb.. These are the things that you can see, so I find it hard to believe that they're attention to detail would be better on the bits that you can't, IMHO.

One thing to add here is that, at least in my experience, an original 930 is a nasty thing to drive; loads of turbo lag & soggy handling. Mine has a later turbo (no lag) and modified suspension. In terms of handling character, the closest I've experienced is Murcielago_boy's 996 GT3RS which had been heavily race tuned. Yes it really is that good. But it's absolutely not original. I don't know which of previous owners did it, or what precisely they did, but every time I get in it I thank them..

I wouldn't discount that car until I'd driven it.

For me the most iconic Porsche. Prices do seem to be on the up, seem to be more expensive than the 964 3.3 turbo now. How much would someone part with for a minter ?

Question what is a minter? Not all views are the same Crimps was in excellent condition. He got around £40k I think any 930 can be made better, with time and money. Before you buy one have to ask yourself, is it a weekend car summer use only. These cars need money spent on them each year items get worn out have to be replaced. Items like shocks, bushes, top end etc. Many owners do not bother to look after there 930? That so why so many turn up on the market, that need £££££ spent on them right away on there upkeep. You may also need back up money for a big bill along the way. If you are handy with a set of spanners that helps as well.
These cars are now over twenty years old, so if they are being used you are looking at 90k+ miles. As soon as you start driving the miles go up?
What you think its worth, and what you get may not be the same?
Dealers selling for between £30k-£50k now on a 930 so are private sellers as well now. There are a few around at just under £30k as well. In the last five years the prices have gone up?

A made up 930 is never going to be worth the same as an original.Am I right in thinking 1974 is pre galvinised? (sorry for the spelling but I hope you get my drift)The old cars rust really badly. The 930 has thicker anti roll bars and torsion springs. As for the engine needing mapping unless it has been EFIed the injection is basically mechanical and can consume a great deal of time to set up.I am sure JBL930 will be along soon to explain that his car is not fragile and due to melt every year. Its just he has been very very very unlucky. He has suffered sods law and some!!!!

He put faith in Ninemeister and Colin, thats where he was let down. The man is using his customers cars as rolling R&D vehicles and letting the customers pay for it when his test mules go tits up frown
Going by testimonials by James and him and failing to find even ONE content turbo customer, Ninemeister is probably the last place on earth I would take a turbo porsche..

Any old 911 is a potential money pit if you buy something that is a bit worn out.
Equally though, they can cost next to nothing to run if you buy a really decent example.
No depreciation, £200 to £500 for a service and pretty cheap to insure on a limited mileage policy.
Get the best one you can afford and don't bother with any modifications.
Just enjoy it for what it is.

There are loads of Turbos out there, but most are snotters. They either have the wrong exterior colour, interior trim and colour, etc etc.. The best is an early car, like the one below owned by a familly member. Guards, black sports leather (not ponsey electric seats), momo period wheel, 4 speed, all original. Family owned (since 1980) 2 owner car that has had a full body and mechanical refresh. Now that is worth a fortune if it were for sale.

Nice, very nice. Shame they drive like st! Seriously I really do not like the way 930s drive so best make sure you do before leaping in.
