Porsche GT Coupé spy-shotted
Running undercover as a Beemer
Porsche's upcoming GT Coupé -- which we first reported in March -- has been caught running under the modified skin of a BMW 5-Series.
According to spy-shotter Hans Lehmann: "Porsche’s all-new fifth model line, which is expected to debut in 2010 and is a front-engined two, or 2+2-seater Grand Tourismo (GT) sports coupe, very much in the tradition of the previous, ill-fated 928."
It's thought that economies of scale involved in parts-sharing virtually dictate that it ought to be built. According Lehmann: "the GT Coupé will be spawned directly by the Panamera saloon and share at least 60 per cent of all parts with the larger 4-door car, including the (shortened) platform, the engines (the most expensive independent component), transmissions (the second most expensive) and suspension corner modules (the third most expensive individual single component of an automobile), among others."
Worldcarfans.com also carries a computer-generated impression of Porsche's upcoming Panamera -- see link below -- better than the one above.

It's not unusual for r&d departments to use existing cars from other manufacturers to test own components; mostly because there is no matching car in the own range. Mercedes-Benz, for example, used a TVR Cerbera to test McLaren SLR components. The chassis was easily adapted since it had similar proportions to those needed.
I thought it looked like a 350Z too. Some very lazy photoshopping going on by Lehmann's studio lately. They were responsible for the spy shots of the esprit which was a photo'd Gallardo.
And the M5 being a Mule is pushing it surely. More likely they are comparing handling/performance characteristics with what'll probably be its biggest rival. Thats what Aston did with the 911's they bought.
!! 928 but Designed by ex U-Boat Kapitan??

Ali.
Here is a PS-job done on that drawing, just with some "usual" Porsche design stuff added. As for a two door GT based on this, I think it looks very promising...

Hate to be pedantic but it's either a Gran Turismo or a Grand Tourer! Wouldn't want to get the wrong wording into people's heads!!
Wikipedia says:
A grand tourer (Italian: Gran Turismo), sometimes initialised GT, is a high-performance automobile designed for long distance driving. Any such car could be considered to be a grand tourer, but the traditional and most common body style is a two door coupé with either a 2-seat or a 2+2 seat arrangement.
Grand tourers differ from sports cars in that they are usually larger, heavier, and tend to make less compromise in comfort for the sake of driving ability. For this reason they mostly have front-mounted engines, which leave more space for the cabin than mid-mounted engines. They also tend to have softer suspension to provide good ride quality. However, grand tourers do have similarities with sports cars, such as the fact they mainly use rear or four wheel drive, and the term sports car may be used to describe a car with grand touring qualities. Very high-performance grand tourers, such as the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren may be considered to be supercars.
