Is the 997TT the MOST BORING car ever made by Porsche?
Discussion
Has the marques over-reliance on the (litigous) US market reuslted in the most boring ever incarnation of the 911 blood line?...the 997TT??
I had one on an extended test drive and it bored me to tears - I've ended up pulling my order - and horror of horror I'm thinking of buying a Ford instead!! (albeit a rather fast one with 550bhp) - it's a crying shame it's come to this!
Furthemore has the brand lost some appeal in becoming too "mass market"? I remember when I picked up my first 911 (1988) - it was a special car - and the dealer/customer relationship was special - now with all these Cayenne's, Caymans, Boxsters and whatever else they are going to be launching, you get better service and sense of "enthusiasm" at the local Lexus dealer!
I never thought I'd see the day that I wouldnt have a 911 of some sort but I fear my current 997 C4S will be my last!
Thoughts?
I think porsche are victims of their own success, having developed the 911 over so many years, it will turn out to be only one thing.. What the 'mass market wants'. The 997 TT is exactly that, very fast & very safe. Over the years all large manufacturers are being forced to produce cars with pretty much no 'edge'.
Its like music, alot of h/core old school guys will still rave about their vinyl and to be honest you can't beat the sound on a good system, but why bother when you have SACD/DVD-A etc, it’s because not everyone wants evolution.. As above, don't just look at whats new and think it’s better, it’s not always the case. If you've got £100k to burn, I'd burn it wisely and widen your view a bit, maybe even let go of 'having to have to latest' medallion
Either that or spend another £££ putting the 'edge' back in your shinny new monster

Oh, TBH I bet the R Kompressor conversion for his current steed plus a few choice bits would fit the bill rather nicely for maybe £20K... Yes, if you want to go truly mental and have another spare £100K to burn in addition to whatever your 997 makes, Rt12 it is. The thing to remember is that I reckon the Ruf gentlemen capable of putting the passion back in Pork, whatever your budget (within reason) - no need to avoid them because you don't want/need the full fat option.

Thats right... after all the company could have survived quite comfortably selling a handful of 911s alone for the rest of its (what would have been very short) days.... Never mind the 924s,28s &44s that were floating around in the dealerships at the time...
You see, money no object my daily driver would be a RUF RCT Evo - it's a single turbo 964 with a 6 speed box and somewhere north of 420bhp...
Alois has one, in dark green (Connaught i believe), and in my eyes it's a very subtle incarnation of a stupidly fast 911. I realise a 911 will never be a Q car, but this comes close.
The 996tt held no appeal for me for the same reasons as the 997tt holds no appeal for you. Very fast, very safe, very uninvolving.

Er, you question the exclusivity of Porsche with their "mass market" Cayenne's, Caymans, Boxsters and whatever and yet you plan to buy a Ford with all their "exclusive" Fiestas, Focuses, Mondeos

I drove the Kompressor car a few months ago in Pfaffenhausen...was really surprised!! Very fast and good fuel economy....perfect daily driver. The power is currently over 40bhp more than mentioned. If - for me - money was no issue, I'd order one immediately.
Although I fully agree with the remark that everyone drives Porsches today and that the factory is victim of its own success. I hope they keep producing the GT and RS types...It's almost like BMW: they need to sell 320d's in order to develop M3 CSL's, M5, M6...shame actually for a brand like Porsche

I've seen that car in the 'second' workshop across the street. It's about as tasteful and restrained as 911's get, classic exterior/interior colour combo, all very form follows function inside and out. I really, really liked it.
