I had the choice of the entire set (blue, orange, yellow, polkadot) when I dropped Scaramanga off with ninemeister for a MoTec Plus 1 upgrade this weekend.

I chose Pagid Blacks on the grounds that, yes, they may ruin my discs but, more importantly, they offer maximum retardation and work well when cold. When the discs are shagged at the end of the year I can always stump up for Big Reds.

Have I made a mistake?

I don't think so - depends what you want from your brakes, everything's a compromise.

If it gets through discs every 1000 miles you may think twice, but otherwise I'm sure you'll be happy with them. But it's proof of the pudding, as they say...

I bet 9M's happy now he's finally got a PHer to part with their hard earned All the best to you both - making the 964RS go even faster is a noble cause. Well, cause to worry a noble at least!

Why not use pagid Greys? They offer a FAR high coefficient of friction (about 0.65) than the blacks and are ceramic based. I'd go for the yellows in preference to the blacks, as they share similar friction levels, but will last longer. Before you buy them from anywhere else, try DS Engineering (steve). It's amazing how much money some people make on these pads. Reckon on about GBP140 per axle set, (rather than GBP190 they usually seem to retail for). If you are going to do this, may as well use castrol SRF or something similar, otherwise it's sort of false economy with the pads....
PS it may be easier to email steve@DSengineering.co.uk than call 01322 307372 as the phone may well ring constantly. They are pretty quick with email replies though!

I went through all the options with Colin and settled with Blacks on the grounds that they offer good retardation when cold. We looked at the coefficient of friction of each, which is on his website too if you hunt it out! Cost was about the same as you quote so I'm cool with it.

Grey is not available for the 964RS caliper and SRF is also being flushed through it's veins. I'm using blacks myself based purely on cold performance for use when hillclimbing and sprinting and since we had a debut win at the opening PCGB sprint at 3 Sisters yesterday I think the choice was well proven.

High friction levels is not always desirable, but since Scaramanga will soon be arriving at bends much quicker than ever before, we thought that having a little in reserve would be a good idea. Once Peter is used to the deceptive performance of the +1 I am sure that we will then move to the more disc friendly yellows, but until then the big anchor will be required, thanks.

Peter,

Seeing as you've gone through all the options, can you please give a synopsis here? Blue, yellow, grey, black....

I've currently got a shedload (ok - about 8pads) of Pagid blues in my garage ready for replacing the rapidly wearing out pads on my big reds - would be interested to hear your reasoning in going for the blacks. My car spends most of its time on track like yours, and I'm always keen to learn about these things.

Cheers,

E

I don't know the history, and I know it's all in jest , but as a potential customer, I very much appreciate reading 9M's views on here , and on 968.net, and his positive input is likely to turn me into an actual customer one day . I chose where I was going to have my car serviced purely through opinions expressed by customers in here and elsewhere on the net -I ended up with JZM ( because I didn't know about 9M), and I'm happy so far. But I'm still after a set of PZero Corsas once my current set wear out, and that may well lead me to 9M's door in the near future. And that will probably lead to other things.

each pad set is a different compromise

Colin will clarify no doubt, and you might as well look ay his website as all the data is there, but in essence for me it boiled down to:

1. retardation when cold
2. ... when hot
3. disc and pad wear

Blacks offer the most retardation when cold and also when hot (I think) but wear the discs out fairly quickly and squeal like a piggie with your hand clenched around its' balls.

So there are pros and cons. Other models might offer better-than-Porsche-std retardation but less wear and tear. To date I've always used std Porsche pads.

Once my current discs are shagged (and I've shagged two sets of discs already on this car) I'll just get Big Reds, and a less agressive set of pads for better wear resistance and similar braking capabilities.

Presumably this is sensible......

I think (!) I've got Pagid Blacks fitted. The car (964RS)had had new discs+'black' pads all round in Oct 2001 at 20,000km..then renewed front pads in Jan 2002 at 23,000km..then renewed rear pads in March 2002 at 28,000km..
I bought the car in Aug 2002 at 30,000km and am about to renew front pads AND front discs in April 2003 at 33,000km..

I`m obviously just not trying hard enough as I have over 1000 track miles and 5000 road miles on my current pads and discs.
The pads were only half worn 5 weeks ago and the discs look hardly worn with no cracks that I can see.
