SharkWerks 991 GT3 Bypass
Discussion
Thinking of fitting the SharkWerks Bypass onto my 991 GT3 as , in truth , the sound of the exhaust , is a tad tame. I wanted to know if anyone could recommend someone brilliant in the Midlands to fit and also to ask those of you who have taken the plunge , is the car without the sports exhaust button on as quiet as at was pre mod? Really looking for the flexibility of tame and quiet (ish) when the button is off vs. raw & loud when on - best of both worlds - Cheers

I was meandering along in the middle lane of the M4 this morning with a 991 GT3 in the outside lane next to me. Gap opened in the traffic and he/she nailed it. Very impressive stuff, engine dropped down two gears (I assume as that's what it sounded like), the bonnet seemed to jump up as weight moved to the back.
Point of the post is that the noise, at least when behind the car, was out of this world. Assuming it was a standard exhaust...would you really want it any louder. I remembered the 911 reg. although I had better not say in public.
My 996 GT3 doesn't sound or perform anything like that.

That is an issue with all 911s - driving away from the sound!
There are already threads on the SharkWerks. I saw on Rennlist someone brought up backpressure issues so hesitant to do anything until the cars have been used for a bit; i don't like being a guinea pig! Moreover, i plan to track the GT3 a lot so any bypass pipe may prove problematic there.
For me, one question is does the Sharkwerks make an improvement lower down? I have no issue with the noise volume above 3krpm, it's just that it makes NO noise below that. As a result my dad's Boxster S was probably more entertaining (from a noise point of view) because it sang across the rev range.

I bought one, loved it, but then discovered on a trip that it has a resonance vibration at 3,000 rpm (about the open road speed limit where I live) so I removed it. It sounded great above 3,500 but this narrow band of harshness spoiled the experience for me. With the old exhaust back on, the vibration has gone. And my Boxster S (with PSE) sounds better than my GT3.
Most of the Sharkwerks sound improvement happens above 3,500 rpm. The idle is a bit bassier but it remains quiet at low revs - a bit louder but not much.

You could try Chris at ABP http://www.abpmotorsport.co.uk/abp-homepage Bit north of the Midlands.
He imported mine (997 Carrera) and offered to fit. He is happy to import for 991 GT3, he said.

I think the noise is a treat if you are outside the car , but a bit tame at lower revs inside - mine does sound great on occasion , but it's rare and you have to have the right set of circumstances for it to happen. I guess bottom line is I much prefer the noise and theatre of my 991 C2S with ,what is probably (?) a synthetic SE than the GT3 - & that just can't be right - real shame , as other than that the car is awesome in every way Point of the post is that the noise, at least when behind the car, was out of this world. Cheers , this is who SharkWerks suggested , just wasn't too sure : looking at the web site as it looked like a big , non specialist , high volume type of place : nothing wrong with that , just not sure I wanted to risk it without knowing anything about it - assume you were happy with service , etc ? - Cheers He imported mine (997 Carrera) and offered to fit. Thanks for the feedback , other than the resonance issue , this sounds perfect - not too loud when pottering , but fun when moving at pace - did the resonance vary with the SE button on/ off ? Was it easy to reverse and did the reversal work ok - IE back to square 1 , no problems ?
Also were you not tempted to try another in case the first one was faulty ?
Really sorry to bombard you with questions

I can understand. I found him on PH. He quoted me the price, took a deposit and ordered them. He has done everything he said he would. Chris has a 997 GTS. If I had any reservations I'd just have kept my head down.

It was very easy to reverse. I'd kept the old muffler in the box the Sharkwerks came in. A couple of hours at my OPC and I was on my way. He already has a buyer for it so I'm only out the install/uninstall expense. Was it easy to reverse and did the reversal work ok - IE back to square 1 , no problems ?

Getting another one from sharkwerks was one thought but I'd expect the same result. If you only used your car on the track or in the city, the resonance wouldn't be an issue. The resonance was the same with or without the PSE button. BTW, the problem wasn't a booming sound; it was a narrow band of harsh vibration that you could feel in your bones.

It's that final 1000rpm that it comes into its own recently. I'm starting to think exhaust mods for the GT3 are just for showing off (i.e. for the benefit of people outside the car!).
I hear what you say , but it's really not easy (responsible) to drive the GT3 in the really high rev bands on normal roads - hence the desire for the noise lower down the range - I agree, there is no real reason for wanting this other than the fact it's smile inducing - nothing more complex than that Edited by RSVP911 on Tuesday 18th November 21:29

As a company we import a lot of product from the US so approached Sharkwerks and they were really positive about supplying me a system (unlike a lot of US companies who think the World stops at the East and West coast!) so I arranged UPS to collect and took the plunge. On the GTS it's a great upgrade and we have subsequently imported and sold 10 x 997.2 exhaust upgrades which have all been sold in less than a month! We have another 5 on order currently being made.
We are able to supply the 991 GT3 system but I have no direct experience of the sound levels etc, fitment looks to be a simple switchover and easier than the 997.2 GTS arrangement. Price wise we will be able to save you money as opposed to buying directly and we can install (based in Cheshire just off M6 J16) or ship out mail order. Please PM or email me on chris@abpmotorsport.co.uk
Apologies for our out of date website but for up to date info just google ABP 'Motorcodes' garage of the year or CAT garage of the year which we won for four consecutive years!
Hope this helps, Chris
I have the bypass on my 991 GT3. No noticeable resonance at any engine speed. Transforms the sound in my opinion while not becoming oppressive at lower revs / when you don't want it. Sharkwerks were a pleasure to deal with and JZM fitted it.
Will limit you to the noisier track days however, so if this is an intended use then I'd consider track day silencer options.

My biggest disappointment compared to my 991 CS is that you don't get pops and crackles with the GT3. Pops and crackles are added through the engine map so would be nice if they had a retrofit for the GT3
Hi Scott , what do you mean re engine map ? Are you saying that at certain revs the exhaust is forced to perform in certain ways - not sure I really understand the whole synthetic exhaust thing ? chrisABP said:
