964 TURBO 3.3 v 964 TURBO 3.6
Discussion
Hi,
looking to purchase a 964 turbo or 964 turbo 2. I understand the main differences, not only engine, but the numbers produced. Also prices are double and more for the turbo 2. Is the 964 2 going to be the better investment for the future even though now it seems alot of money in comparison for a similar 964 1 version. It is very difficult to justify the additional money for the 964 2.
It would have very limited miles put on it over the years if i did purchase.
what would you do?

There are 2 versions the 3.3 and the 3.6. Its the
rarity that inflates the value. There is a modist
Performance increase. As an investment asset the
3.6 is probably the best bet. However make sure
You get a good one as the 3.6 engine is a bit of
A mish mash trying to be EFI but still using the CIS
fuel head. If you're into modifying the 3.3 is
the better option.

There is no such thing as a 964 turbo 1 or turbo 2. As UV says there are two versions of the 964 turbo - the 3.3 (1991-93) and the 3.6 (1993-94). Both were 911 turbos; the 3.3 was simply badged "turbo" but the 3.6 was badged "turbo 3.6". The nickname "turbo 2" came before the 3.6 was even released and was coined by some people to distinguish it from the original 911 turbo (the 930). It is also known as the 965 (another nickname) as it has quite a few parts listed starting with "965...".
As UV says, for investment buy the 3.6 as there were far fewer produced and they tend to be lower mileage and have only light modifications. For sheer value for money buy a good 3.3, add some Speedline look wheels (£1k) and new headers (£2k) and you'll have the looks and performance of a standard 3.6 for about half the price. There are a few cars out there for sale with exactly these mods - go and have a drive in a 3.3 and then drive a 3.6 and decide if it's worth the extra for the 3.6.

The 3.3 is 90% of the car for 70% of the money. If money is not an issue then the 3.6 is the better car but value-for-money the 3.3 has it beaten IMO and can easily be modded to produce 3.6 power.
Totally agree, i owned a mint 3.3 and could hardly tell the difference in the real world, 3.6's are nice but not worth the on cost IMOI Bought a 3.3 Turbo a few months back after looking at quite a few,i think being totally specific about 3.3 or 3.6 is difficult as neither car is exactly in plentiful supply, especially in the sort of condition and history that i wanted..personally i think condition, mileage, history etc eventually will make either car reasonably valueable.A mint condition low mileage 3.3 will be worth more eventually than a doggy high mileage badly treated 3.6 imo..

There is a Turbo 2 produced only for the US market also known as the S2. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/964-turbo-fo...As UV says, for investment buy the 3.6 as there were far fewer produced and they tend to be lower mileage and have only light modifications. Ah-ha, a fellow Rennlister. As the thread says, these Andial converted cars were never badged or called a turbo 2, just turbo or S2. I had a 3.6T for a while in 2001/2. Even then it was a garage queen with I think 16k miles when I bought it (so around 2k per annum). A beautiful car with great driveability. When it worked. Which was rarely, because that little usage had led to all sorts of seals drying out and perishing. We never quite got the car to run reliably - it was particularly fond of idling at 4k RPM - so in the end I changed it for GT3. I've regretted it ever since, and would buy another one now *if* I could find one that had been used properly (and was certain that it was genuine - there's no shortage of cosmetic jobs out there) and hadn't been crashed (there's a few of those too). You're much more likely to find a well-looked-after 3.3 which runs nicely, and you won't torpedo its value if you make a few sensible mods. I've got a 997T now, and while it's much much faster than the 964, it has none of the character.
I owned a 964 3.6 turbo for eight years. Did not put much mileage on it but it always run like a dream. Apart from when it lunched its turbo but that is a different story. Low build numbers for 964 3.6 means that it will always command a premium. 964 3.3 turbo as a car 911 is not far behind. The most important thing is buy on condition. The 3.6 variant will be a chunk more money.

I think you are a bit confused. If you are buying purely or mainly for investment purposes then it *has* to be the 3.6. If you are buying based on the driving experience and looks etc then the 3.3 is better value as others have said. Do not confuse these two scenarios - they are not compatible IMHO. looking to purchase a 964 turbo or 964 turbo 2. I understand the main differences, not only engine, but the numbers produced.
