Porsche 917 in 'poll' position

Club members vote on their favourite Porsches

The Porsche 917K has been voted the all-time favourite Porsche by members of the Porsche Club GB during a recent poll. The stunning Le Mans car pipped the classic 2.7RS in the final standings.

Earlier this summer, the Club invited its 16000 members to vote for their favourite Porsche, both on the Club website and through Porsche Post, the Club’s monthly magazine.

The list of models to choose from covered every aspect of Porsche’s history and included both road and race cars. Members had a maximum of five votes to allocate.

The two models at the top of the list were no surprise, although it would have been a brave man who would have bet on the order. The charisma of these two Porsche icons never wanes and with 25% of the vote, the 917K was a clear winner from the 1973 2.7RS which polled 23%.

The results, in reverse order, were:

Bubbling under: 968 Club Sport, 944 S2 and 944
10: 356 Speedster
9: 996 GT3
8: 944 Turbo
7: 550 Spyder, RSK etc.
6: Carrera GT
5: 993 RS
4: 904
3: 959
2: 911 RS 2.7
1: 917K etc.

McQueen helped to spread the 917-image but the dutch driver who did it for me was, Le Mans 1971 G.van Lennep - 3315.2- 138.13 mph.
Other 917 drivers in 1970 & 1971 were Jo Siffert, Pedro Rodriguez, Brian Redman, Rolf Stommelen, Derek Bell, Kurt Ahrens, Reinhold Joest and Willi Kauhsen.

"The cars were reaching impressive speed in the straight, in 1971, during night practice, a Porsche 917 LH reached a top speed of 396.004 km/h."

Part of the 917s looks are due to crazy colourschemes. Have a look at this one:

The Gulf colourscheme looks great on the 917:

When Porsche came to the Can-Am in 1972, McLaren had dominated the series for five straight years. Roger Penske's 917/10K entries for Mark Donohue and George Follmer put an end to that.

Former PCA President Chuck Stoddard's pristine 917 at Lime Rock.

This 1100-hp 917/30 represents the pinnacle of 917 development. At Rennsport Reunion at Lime Rock in 2001, Roger Penske himself took the famous Can-Am spyder for a ride.
