Urgent 944 Gearbox Advice Required
Discussion
Hi all,
944 S2 in for a service and I have been told that the gearbox is knackered and very noisy.
This concerns me as the car is very quiet and has been looked at by a couple of specialists who have commented that the gearbox doesn't whine like most.
They are suggesting replacement and I am seeing the car tomorrow for them to show me. Can anyone suggest what a knackered gearbox sounds like? Apparantly the g/box bearings are breaking up.
My friend who owns a Jag has commented that the 944 is even quieter than his car!
Please help if you have any experience with this issue.
Many thanks
Simon

Yes they are a specialist but not used them before. Went to see the car today and there is a noise when in neutral that is like a rattling which stops as soon as the clutch is depressed. Apparantley there is slack in the drive chain.
They also reckon the ball joints are worn and quoted £434 + VAT each side and 3hrs labour!
For now they are going to replace the Cam tensioners, which they have shown me make a noise and whilst they are doing that, they will be doing the balance and cam belt.
To service the car, change the brake fluid and do the above will be £835 ish!
Still the gearbox and ball joints to go.......
If I go ahead with a gearbox I will hunt for an s2 box with the LSD option so at least I would be upgrading!
Any thoughts would be welcomed
Cheers
