Porsche 996 rally car any thoughts

Just daydreaming recently, as my 50th birthday is approaching I was thinking of starting a new project. In my late teenage years and twenties I rallied the good old Ford Escorts both Mk1 and Mk2. Before giving up due to the usual responsibilities and not having deep enough pockets. Combined with this I have always had a love of the Porsche 911, I would love to rally a 70's 911 but alas my pockets still aren't that deep. However with the price of 996 being so reasonable eg; http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p... I began to develop an idea of creating a 996 homage to one of my old favorite 911 rally cars
The question I am seeking advice on is Carrera 4 or 2 as a starting point and has anyone done it before so has any top tips. As a quick Google search does not bring much up.
I have no illusions of WRC driving it would be purely to have a bit of fun, with use on single venue events up here in the Midlands where there are a lot of old airfields etc and of course track days
Yes I know that for the money I could buy a rally prepared EVO but the idea is to own a 911 and have some Porsche fun, as I know I won't be competitive with the big boys anyway.

Hi thanks for the replies, it is quite an appealing idea of trying to find a cat c or d gt3 or even a turbo!, but I am just doing it for fun so even a stripped out standard car cat d car could be a good option and should have plenty of power for me. I used to rally a mk1 Mexico (wish i still had it) and that only had approx 160bhp and that was still a hoot to drive. My ideas of a homage aren't that sophisticated as yet other than to paint it Orange, have the white roundels on the doors 
and some replica Fuchs alloys if they are available.
I guess I was just wondering why it doesn't appear to have been done before, it can't be just me that would like to hoon around an old airfield pretending to be Björn Waldegård, in a 911.

Good point about the engine a quick Google reveals that the 2014 MSA handbook states:
Engine
48.2. Comply with the following specification and actual
capacity limits:
48.2.1. Production Car Engines with a maximum of six
cylinders:
a) Petrol engines with forced induction up to 2000cc
with a 34mm restrictor or up to 2500cc with a
32mm restrictor, and diesel engines with forced
induction up to 2500cc with a 37mm restrictor.
b) Naturally aspirated with more than 2 valves per
cylinder – up to 3000cc.
c) Naturally aspirated with maximum of 2 valves per
cylinder – up to 3500cc.
So I think looking at section c an early 3.4 996 would be just the job, I like it when a plan comes together

With regards to budget a quick guesstimate 8 to 9k for a car, roll cage £600 pair of FIA seats £1000, harnesses £280 etc etc got to be something like 13-14k just to run a standard spec 996 in rally trim. Dependant on me doing the work of course which is part of the fun. But the joy is I can buy the car and do it as a rolling project, using it for track days from the start. I'm in no rush I've waited this long.

that answers the question of why there are no 996s rallying I really fancied it too.

I can find a refurbished engine for around £1000 on ebay, or a whole car for less than £2000. Has anybody in the UK done this?
It's getting a bit more complicated than just putting a cage etc into a 996 though.
