Mileage limits on insurance

What happens if you pass your pre-set mileage limit on your insurance - any experiences.

It was the "pro rata" bit that I was after. I agree, there is no point in passing the limit without informing the insurance company. That would give the loss adjuster a field day in case of an accident.
