My moneys on the fuel we use today, due to the ethonal which is in petrol today it eats rubber fuel lines ,all you classic car owners out there should no that and if not checked after a car has been standing for a while you could have a leak, and with an engine like that in the back which are prone to catching fire thats what happens.shame...............
Like what tortop45 says, check your pipes. This fuel pipe was only 6 months old on my Cortina.

Not sure I follow. Fair enough the fuel hose is being fitted to a classic, but if it was only 6 months old then surely it was a modern fuel hose built for modern fuel?!
This did happen about 2 years ago when i was changing the carb.I went to the local independant car spares place and bought some fuel hose off the shelf, it was probably hose that was fine a few years earlier but with the increase in god knows what in the fuel clearly no good any more and he probably shouldn't have stocked it.
