Will this be the cheapest way to 200mph (once the limiter has been taken off)?

It wasnt that long ago that most cars were in the 1,000-1,200kg bracket. I wonder how much of a modern cars weight comes down to nanny-state safety requirements like 10 airbags, multiple crumple zones, quad side impact bars, integrated roll over bars in the roof sections etc etc, and whilst this is a nice plus point about car technology evolution, we are all being speed-fined into doing 20mph everywhere, so how much of it is really necessary ?!

Id dare say it is quite a while ago that ave car weight was 1000-1200kg.

My 1997 Fiat Coupe is 1300kg and that was designed/first out on a 1993/94.

"wasnt that long ago" meant 20 yrs ago !!! ... and to put that into context, I've been driving for a few years longer than that.

I've had plenty of cars in the 900kg - 1100kg bracket. EG, MK1, MK2 and MK3 Golf GTi's which were 800kg / 970kg / 1150kg respectively (varied with spec).

Which is why the original Mk2 GTi was such a hoot to drive, because whilst its engine 'was only' 120bhp or so, its power to weight ratio was similar to to a more modern 1,700kg car with 225bhp. Although as I originally pointed out, the way this translates into real road performance is based on many other things, not least of which is what gear ratios have been used.

These days I like cars that give huge acceleration up to 100mph, but am really not bothered about being able to do a theorectical 190mhp blah blah. So instead, I'd be happy to have the gearing reduced so that it topped out at 120/130, but with the power band spread over a narrower speed range. With a quick box, this would produce significant mid range acceleration with no change to engine power, or braking capacity etc etc.

Why do that when you have the engine from the gallardo in it

According to wikipedia the M5 (507bhp) will only do 195mph (actual speed).

ETA

According to wikipedia the RS6 (572bhp) will only do 170mph (actual speed). Must be crap aerodynamics (for top speed).

Hmm, I wouldn’t quite believe wikipedia for everything... !

In defence of the Audi, I think you'll find that the real top speed is approx 190mph+ despite the boxy aerodynamics.

I have owned two earlier RS6's, and on trips abroad both would have no problem exceeding 170+. And using a GPS I know its indicated speed was 3mph out, at a fair bit more than this figure. But where in the UK is there any point trying this without recklessly risking a prison sentence with the consolation of a Daily Mail headline as a badge of honour ?!

Audi fitted a limiter probably to appease the green brigade, but there doesn’t actually appear to be one. After all, who is going to test it ?! Anyone complaining that that the 155mph limiter isn’t working is wasting their breath and self incriminating themselves...

Anyway, its all hypothetical willy waving. You don’t buy an RS6 or any other supercar to drive everywhere at near top speed. Like I said in an earlier post, I'd be quite happy with a max of something over 100 or so … so long as I can get there damn quick, when no ones looking, and to put a smile on my face in an increasingly Orwellian society with a govt who positively hate anything like this, and captained by a hopelessly inept ‘leader’ who doesn’t actually drive, and has been chauffeured around his entire life.

What a pointless exercise!

I really think that for a large saloon/estate the cut-off point should be around 450 BHP.
