It cant be that orange thing, thats Focus ST Coupe, it needs to be called Capri and carry some DNA, having driven the new style Mustang I can safely say it does the job, it feels lively and isnt overly refined, proper Blue Collar Edge to it, sophisticated it isnt, not even that good but it had a lot more character than most modern cars. Please dont bother if its going to be front wheel drive and cab forward, it needs to have an overly long bonnet and take most of the styling cues from the pre facelift Mk1.

Trouble is, I think the time for a new Capri has almost passed, what with the draconian and unfair tax laws there will be no V6 burble, just a diesel clatter, ok if it must happen can it be a BMW style straight six torque monster that actually sounds ok (for a diesel)

Any capri replacment is bound to be FWD, the odd's of rear wheel drive are almost non existant
It's not that Ford don't or won't have the option of RWD. The global RWD platform has just been given the green light. Given this will also underpin the Aussie Falcon, that means RHD too.

clap That's a pretty decent effort. Just needs the front elongated slightly and dropped a touch.

Times are changing. Alfa are now looking to go back to RWD, so maybe there's hope for Ford to do the same. In fact the new capri could have the Alfa 3.0 V6.... mmmmm V6.

Reckon we could see something with a bit more oomph by 2012 wink
The rear of the second pix looks a bit Audi-ish to me?!?!?!

Nice productive comment to this nostalgic discussion from Bob there.

I also loved his view on the Sierra Cosworth.

By any chance are you at all anti Ford Bob?

Basing a coupe on a saloon is what all manufacturers do, the Scirocco is just a sat on Golf for example & the orginal Capri (as we see it today, we'll ignore the Consul Capri) was based on the Cortina.

Expecting a new Capri to be anything other than a re-bodied Focus is being more than a little over-optimistic therefore.

& do you really want to pay more cash just to get a sat-on Focus?

No & nor does any other right thinking car buyer.

's dead duck.

If they had any balls they'd build the 2.8i version again on a chassis(mk III was it?) with a V8 and chuck in some ABS which you can turn off and traction control that can be turned off aswell thats all you'd need.

Instead like has been pointed out we'll have the 'Capri Duratorque Style' with crappy Aston imitation looks.

I'd guess the 5 cyl is a transverse mount which makes it another none starter.

I had 2 MK 111 Capris as a young sales rep in the early 80's. The 2.0 was quick enough in a straight line and I was the envy of most of the other reps at the time who had to make do with Cortinas and Marinas. biggrin

Assuming (yeah right) it is going to be RWD. In the same way that the Focus RS is 4WD.

The Mondeo is due to get the Volvo derived inline 6 soon, that wouldn't be a bad power plant. What it really needs though, is what it never got in the 70s/80s. A V8. Ford isn't exactly short of those. Now Jag is finally going, can we have more Vee-goodness please!

Please Mr Ford, don't make it another lightweight FWD homage. The Capri was all about hairy chests, big cojones and medallions. It was not about 23 year old females in chic designer clothes that go out of fashion in 2 years when the next thing comes along. The Scirocco looks a great car for what it is, but the Capri was never an Escort coupé.

The Auto Bild / Auto Express mockups should be taken with a skip of salt, their artists impressions rarely look anything like the real model.

No, it was a Cortina Mk II coupe, complete with leaf springs even when the Cortina progressed to better suspension with the Mk III in 1971.

I thought that's exactly what it was about. It was a huge coupe with little power, even in the v6s. Apart from the rare cooking ones it was all mouth and no trousers. It's only 'virtue' was that it handled like st and therefore you could hang the arse out all the time whether you wanted to or not. Ford will never make another one because they'll have to make something widely seen as ste, pretty dangerous and ridiculed until years after it's dropped from the range when it'll be talked about endlessly on the internet but still not actually bought because they'll still be something better to buy however cheap the capri gets. It's not worth them building a new capri for a handful of die hard enthusiasts.
