Shell sells billionth litre of Optimax

Customer gets a day at MPH'04

Shell Optimax, the UK's best selling performance fuel has powered past another key milestone as Shell yesterday announced the sale of its one billionth litre of Optimax, which was launched in the UK in 2002.

Approximately one in every eight Shell fuel customers now buys Optimax fuel which is available at over 900 Service Stations across the country. Shell calls it "the UK's best selling performance unleaded fuel."

Shell UK retail director John Rasmussen said, "all of us at Shell are delighted with the continued success of Shell Optimax.  The product really builds on Shell's proven motorsport heritage and our customers continue to tell us what a difference it makes to their driving experience."

To mark the sale of the billionth litre of Optimax, a Shell customer was awarded an all expenses paid, champagne reception at MPH '04 (see link to PistonHeads story below). The moment was also marked by a cavalcade of elite sporting machinery entering the forecourt in central London to fill-up with their usual tank of Optimax.  Ferraris, Lotus, Lamborghini and Mercedes were all present, filling up with the highest octane fuel available at forecourts in the UK before they moved on to Shell's offices on the Southbank.

Shell Optimax, the title sponsor of MPH '04 was developed by the same technicians who helped formulate the fuels that powered Michael Schumacher's Formula 1 successes, says Shell.  It has been designed to help motorists get the most out of their engines by burning more cleanly to give maximum performance. Shell Optimax has been specially formulated to improve responsiveness and help to keep engines clean by controlling the build up of valve deposits.

MPH '04 will be running from 18th to the 21st November.  Those interested in attending the event should visit www.mphshow.com for further details.

I thought this was just going to be corporate fanfare, but they actually CLAIM to be able to know exactly who purchased it! (Doubtful but, I suppose, technically possible).

Not only that though, but Shell had a series of performance cars ready to drive into JUST THAT GARAGE immediately after! Amazing that out of their hundreds of dealerships, they knew just where it would be, eh? I wish I was as prescient as the Shell people - if I was I'd buy a lottery ticket AND do an accumulator at the bookies!

Oh, and it just happened to be in London! Despite:-
a) the lack of probability of it being in the capital as opposed to outside.
b) the likely case that more people in non-metropolitan areas will use it as they're the ones who are more likely to notice the benefit on OPEN roads!!!

Bleedin' publicity-hungry London-centric...

All they had to know was the garage that bought a load of fuel that included the 1 billionth litre.

Then all they had to do was wait until that litre was sold!
