New fuel discount scheme launches
Can this really cut petrol prices?
A new discounted petrol scheme has just launched, which said that it expects to be able to offer its members discounts of between 5p and 10p a litre.
The scheme, dubbed Pipeline, was established in 2005 by Ben Scammell, a keen motoring enthusiast. He personally funded the setup of the www.fairfueltax.co.uk Web site in 2004 to funnel the feelings of those of us who disagreed with the financial persecution of the motorist.
Scammell's a member of the Mitsubishi Lancer Register and spends much of his free time organising events for club members, and he races his Caterham 7 Roadsport in the Caterham Roadsport Inter championship.
The Web site reports that Scammell is currently negotiating with a major national fuel retailer and expects to be able to offer cheaper petrol and diesel in most parts of the UK as soon as there are enough members of the scheme.
Also, what's the target membership figure? Being a cynic I suspect there isn't one and if there was the 'mystery' petrol company will be dictating it. i.e. BP (or whoever - wonder why BP immediately comes to mind though...) says if you can get 3million (as an example) to sign up you've got a deal. Knowing that in all likelihood and with the best will in the world any high target is going to be hard to reach.
I really do hope this works, I love it when the small guys goes head to head with big companies. Well done Ben. I will pass this link on to 3 million of my closest friends.....
ben goes to BP (or other company) with his proof that 3million members (or however many) will buy petrol from them if they can get a discount. its just simple strength in numbers, negotiating a better deal.

I think this is a great idea and have also signed up. Can someone tell me how this will work though? Will pipeline 'virtually' buy a job lot of petrol then 'virtually' sell it cheaper to customers with their card through the suppliers petrol station network? Would be interested to know the specifics of how this would work. 5-10p a litre off is a tall claim.
