Starter bloody starter

At over £300 a pop that's a lot of money on starter motors
That frustrated me when I paid over £300 for the starter motor on mine and it only lasted a year before it started playing up. So I went the cheaper route after that and purchased the clutch part myself for around £50 and I fitted it myself. It is a bit of a pig to squeeze the starter motor through a gap that doesn't look big enough, but I got there in the end and it lasted longer than the new one I'd had put in.
two from TVR parts lasted just over a years use, the last one just spun and wouldn't engage. The latest is from Str8Six, Jason says he uses a different one. Triton (not TVR supplied) on the invoice...
So that £1k on starters in 5 years.... (off road for paint and engine rebuild)

That is some money on starters for sure! So that £1k on starters in 5 years.... (off road for paint and engine rebuild)
Mine was fitted by Jason as well, but I can't remember if it was a Triton one or not.

It's not a Triton unless you fitted a shower rather than a starterhttps://tiltonracing.com/product-category/starter/

I fitted a new clutch about a year ago, and it engages perfectly now
However, it still suffers from heat soak
So I've ordered a new solenoid as well
Hopefully that will mean I don't have to pretend I have Stop-Start and manually switch off the ignition each time the car is stationary
Although come to think of it, I may continue to do the manual Stop-Start since fuel is going to be over £2 per L by the time I get to drive it again

I was certain that I needed a new starter last summer - it would always pause cranking when hot but would normally start on the second push of the button.
While trying to figure out some other issue, I put in a new battery and the hot start issue went away :-)
Easiest job I’ve ever had to do on the Cerb ;-)

Hi everyone,
Just out of curiosity, has anyone fitted a new starting motor lately? I fitted a Wosp starter back in January 2020 and it has just started the occasional screech while not engaging and on times works with no issues.
Tried varying thickness of shims but still the odd screech, I tried buying the drive assembly kit and bits but they seem to be no longer available.
I went looking for an alternative and came across this.![yikes](/inc/images/yikes.gif)

If I say I can’t be bothered messing about anymore and decide a new starter is the way to go, is this my only option or where do I look.
Cheers and happy mothers day

Hi All,
Can someone suggest a solution to my ongoing starting issue?
The immobiliser started playing up last year with intermittent fuel pump and starter issues, fuel pump primming and sometimes not primming, same sort of issue with the starter util the starter finally died and was replaced with a new old stock the end of May but looking back I wasn’t completely sure about the connection of the black starter wire on the solenoid, I just wanted to get it fitted.
New immobiliser and alarm fitted mid-April this year.

A couple of days after new immobiliser fitted the starter began to play up again, no clicking, no spinning or screeching total silence. Replaced relay but still intermittent.
Is this the correct starter relay?

I keep coming back to the thin black starter lead on the solenoid, if that had a poor connection and not enough power getting through, could this be the cause.
Any thoughts will be appreciated.
Thanks
Nigel

Right, the fault accured agin today, press button, fuel pump primes no noise from saterter just a cluck from the rear. Jumped out, removed relay and linked 30 and 87 in the fuse board, same result, just a clunk sound nothing from starter.
Does this mean that I'm back looking at the immobiliser?
Cheers

I had the exact same symptoms last spring. Found a starter relay in the passenger footwell - suffering from corrosion. It fed the final power to the solenoid. It was with the jumble of boxes etc hanging around the MBE. I seem to recall that the power feed comes from the 110 amp fuse in front of the top passenger door hinge. Looks like the same spec of relay.

Where the starter solenoid wire connects to the harness plug, (near the big fuse in the engine bay) I found the plug to be two pin with only one pin used. I have a dedicated ‘test wire’ from this other pin up to the battery (jumper wire looped on harness to other pin)
If an issues occurs with the dreaded black button press and no start I can bypass with direct battery current to the solenoid to rule out a component failure. Luckily upto now I have needed to use it!
