Hi all,

First question, has anyone got a spare V8 Starter motor in good condition?

Second question, where is the best place to get a starter motor referb?

Cheers

I had mine refurbed by the local Lucas shop, but in hindsight, I should have just bought a new Nissan Maxima one (<93 3.0 auto), as even without an exchange item it would have worked out cheaper (£195 vs £260), and given a longer warranty (2yrs vs 1 yrs, IIRC).

I went for the Maxima route.

See my thread. Also gives you part numbers and dealer details.

Hasn't there been quite a few people who've gone down the replacement route and found that the new starter motors fail very quickly? In fact I'm sure I read a thread a while ago saying how much better quality the internals of the standard tilton motor are compared to most otheres, which would explain why original ones seem to last so much longer. With that in mind, I think if I ever have to replace my starter, I'll just be reconditioning the original, even if it is a bit more expensive.

I thought it was more a case of the starter being cooked by the exhausts and no real air flow in this general area. Maybe a bit of heat shielding applied to the case will help.

Apparently, when being reconditioned, there are superior/inferior internals that can go in aswell. So you want it refurbed using the best bits smile

"Midland starter motors" did a good job at refurbing my original.

The "new" one from CE Smith (Ebay) lasted a fortnight & got threw in the bin.

I fitted the Nissan type autumn time and its been great, turns over full speed all the time....inspiring a little confidence again. The standard one was getting lazy ( slow / fast radial speed ) and when the internal starter gearing started failing, catching periodically ( sounded terrible ).. time for a complete change out ....smile

Try Curd Brothers on North Farm Industrial estate in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

They supplied a new clutch and gear for mine and it works a treat now.

All the best

I've just had mine rebuilt for £65, and I have a spare that could do with a rebuild. I could get that done and its yours for the cost of the rebuild + postage and your old one. pm me if you're interested.
