Back in 2015 replaced the starter motor with new 2.5kw unit due to an intermittent fault with the previous motor not engaging. September last year started getting the same intermittent fault of starter spinning but not engaging, since September the car has been SORN but only last couple of weeks had time to sort it.
Had starter motor tested at local factors last month with result being starter ok.
So fitted new Battery CCA 570 tested yesterday 560 CCA, new live cable from battery to starter fitted, new relay fitted and replaced solenoid with WOSP LMRS010, put most of the car back together yesterday, check starting and all worked well. This morning replaced faulty passenger door solenoid put air box and bits back ready for a jolly and hey ho starter spinning and not engaging.
Any suggestion will be gratefully received. Doing my head in.

Jhonno, the original had no spacer so just assumed replacement would be the same.
Penelope Stopit, yes the motor does sound like it is turning very fast.
CerbWill, just ordered RD600K TVR AJP8 Starter Clutch.
Gentlemen you have no idea how much this had been doing my head in, truly appreciated.

Thank you guys

Good morning gentlemen, while the starter is out on the bench can anybody think of anything that is worth checking, not particularly interested in going through this too often.

Thanks Nigel

Can this be beaten,
Yesterday @ 13:22 can’t figure out what the problem is with the starter motors so paste the problem up here. An hour later and three replies, so while reading the replies I phone Racetech and place the order, this morning I take it all apart again, starter on the bench ready for new starter motor clutch unit. This afternoon parcel arrives with said clutch unit and fuse holder for starter/alternator, swap everything over and hey presto it lives. I have been driving about for the last hour stopping and starting for no reason.
Talk about talking to the right people at the right time at the right place.

Delighted. clap

Byker28i, what do you have fashioned over the top of the starter, I’m assuming it’s to deflect the heat from the near side manifold. I’m not totally convinced my starter repairs are going to last for a great period of time. I went for a short jolly today only sixty miles or so, got back home and parked on the drive, 15 minutes later went to move it and first press ended with the dreaded starter screech, now I’m wondering does the starter have an overheating problem.
Has anyone else fitted some sort of heat protection to the starter/solenoid and how are they secured.
Juddder, I managed to get the starter out by removing the fuel rail, 100amp fuse and the nearest coil pack, what a mare, I couldn’t bring myself to remove the inlet manifold as well.
Cheers

Hi everyone,
Just out of curiosity, has anyone fitted a new starting motor lately? I fitted a Wosp starter back in January 2020 and it has just started the occasional screech while not engaging and on times works with no issues.
Tried varying thickness of shims but still the odd screech, I tried buying the drive assembly kit and bits but they seem to be no longer available.
I went looking for an alternative and came across this. yikes

If I say I can’t be bothered messing about anymore and decide a new starter is the way to go, is this my only option or where do I look.

Cheers and happy mothers day

Hi All,
Can someone suggest a solution to my ongoing starting issue?
The immobiliser started playing up last year with intermittent fuel pump and starter issues, fuel pump primming and sometimes not primming, same sort of issue with the starter util the starter finally died and was replaced with a new old stock the end of May but looking back I wasn’t completely sure about the connection of the black starter wire on the solenoid, I just wanted to get it fitted.
New immobiliser and alarm fitted mid-April this year.

A couple of days after new immobiliser fitted the starter began to play up again, no clicking, no spinning or screeching total silence. Replaced relay but still intermittent.
Is this the correct starter relay?

I keep coming back to the thin black starter lead on the solenoid, if that had a poor connection and not enough power getting through, could this be the cause.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.
Thanks
Nigel

Right, the fault accured agin today, press button, fuel pump primes no noise from saterter just a cluck from the rear. Jumped out, removed relay and linked 30 and 87 in the fuse board, same result, just a clunk sound nothing from starter.

Does this mean that I'm back looking at the immobiliser?

Cheers

Thanks Notaping, I think my next challenge is working out why there is no power getting to the relay.

Hi All,
Thanks for the input, I had a chat with Carl last night and have now ruled out the immobiliser, I did a check on the starter signal wire with the Sealey probe and nothing.
So, tonight I’m looking to remove the starter and do some checks.
I’ve got graphite powder being delivered tomorrow, I’m hoping that this is all I’m going to need.
Cheers

Well,
This is the state of the exciter wire,

I don't think I can leave that like that.
So, hopefully replace wire and lubricate solenoid with graphite powder, I really don't want to buy another starter for a while,
surely, I can make a good one out of these.

Quick update, new exiter wire soldered in, solenoid all graphited up and an earth cable fitted from the battery terminal to one of the starter fixing bolts. All seems to be working well.
So confident I wen't and had the air con re charged smile

Thanks for all the input.

I seem to have developed a starter issue.
I think it is the solenoid as when the black button is pushed I can hear a click from the Solenoid but no cranking and now power draw from the battery. Only does it when hot.
Starter is a WOSP unit, does anyone know where I can get a solenoid from ?
Cheers
Gruf

This is what I was struggling with the wosp starter from October 2020, fortunately I contacted CCW Tools who from somewhere found a new old stock starter, but where adamant solenoids where no longer available. Like Ukkid35 said, somewhere between 2020 and 2024 the solenoid unit changed.

Not much help I know but surely the solenoid must be used on another brand of starter.

Have you looked at the connection of the black exciter wire, mine was in bits.

The new starter from wosp does look a bit special, but I was over at Taylor TVR in April, and they were more than happy with the unit supplied by Racetech Direct.
