Anyone Know What This Bos Does??

I am having a problem with the lights on my cerb. I noticed the headlights come on when the ignition is switched on, i then noticed i had a burnt wire on the main supply to the lights switching unit in the boot.. see pic..
On my way home last night my headlights started to flicker (Main beam ok) so i stoped and decided it would be a good idea to disconnect this as i was getting concerned about the heat and condition of this wire. With this box disconnected the headlights (front only) still worked.
about ten mins later i lost all lights - so stopped again and this time another unmarked box was very hot so i disconnected it. However i am not sure what it is or is supposed to do - i dosen't look like a tipical tvr control box and since its been disconnected i can get no headlights even with the other box plugged back in i can only have side lights or main beam.
if anyone can shed any light on it (no pun intended!) it would be much appreciated..
