911 over a 348 ? What would you choose and why ?
Discussion
Guys could I present a situation to you ?
Would you choose a 348 or over a 911 (996) for day to day use ?
I know each has their strengths but as a true day to day car what would you choose and why?
Im seriously not trying to cause a fight / dispute over this.
Just trying to find out what each fan of the brand would choose and why?
Im due to look at both models this weekend and would gratefully appreciate constructive comments on both situations of ownership.
Thanks for the advice.

It really comes down to how you are going to use it. I've had a 911 and a 996 targa, as well as two M5s and two Ferrari's. (Damn there's a pattern there!). Anyway without doubt nothing comes close to Ferraris. Other cars might be faster and handle better than my car (Mondial t) but too me they were just too ordinary. It just didnt excite me sittng behind the wheel looking at the dash. Not only that 99% of the time im not driving it on the limit but sitting behind the wheel driving at normal speeds. So if im not being excited by my car 99% of the time whats the point?
But, and this is a big but.. It goes down to your lifestyle. I cant drive my car to work. I cant even tell my staff I own one. So for me its purely a play thing. But if you can, then i'd go for the Ferrari any day. You will get more attention, so dont wear a flash watch and dont carry too much cash. Insurance will take care of things if you knock it or god forbid it should get nicked.
The front comparment should be able to hold shopping, or start to buy online! Finally maintenance might be a bit more than other cars, but you will lose less on depreciation which should make up for that. And remember you have one life, and many regrets. You decide will this be one of them???

I have just gone from a 348 (Spider) to a 911 (3.2 carrera).
Every day car, has to be the Porsche. High mileage crucifies Ferrari values unfortunately.
If money was no object which would I PREFER to drive everyday - Ferrari 348 no question (even against the more user friendly 996).
So: head = Porsche... heart = Ferrari

Thanks Guys for the responses.
Would any of you look at the New Merc SL 500 as an alternative to the Porsche or Ferrari or is the 911 the best of the day to day 'Drivers' Cars so to speak.
I think you are now looking at something which is pretty far removed from the 'sports' car principle. An SL 500 would probably make the best day-to-day driver out of all of your options but would also make the worst (IMO) weekend/sunny evening blat car. A 996 sounds like the ideal middle ground to me - given your choices.
Not driven the SL - but given t's not a sports version (i.e. no AMG) then I'd imagine it would be rather soft.
Equally - given your fleet and the impending arrival of the Gransport, I'd say that a 911 is a bit pointless in many ways. Assuming you're not planning to use the G/S day to day, then I'd go for the SL as the day to day car personally....

I was chatting to an old mate at a dinner party a couple of weeks ago, he bought a 348 not so long ago which he tried to use as a daily runner but ended up selling it due to the mechanical problems he had with it (don't know what they were) and general discomfort as his daily drive.
Just one story out of many I'm sure, but worth adding to the pile.
IIRC the later models (1992 onward) are much less problematic than the earlier ones. I think the clutch in early models was suspect, and was upgraded to a dual disc version a bit later. The fuel injection systems and suspension were upgraded I believe also to counter reliability issues.

The 348 IMO is one of the worst looking street-use Rari's but I'd have one over a 911 every day . . . A 70s 911 RS would be top though . . .

Get a 348 for weekends and a mondeo for everyday use.
For most of us an excellent idea.
Pete - why you toying with a 348 / 911 when the Maserati G/S is on the way? not jealous at all ( ) but a bit confused!
I always wanted a Ferrari Rich. Just wanting to scratch that 'itch' I guess.
I also like the look of the 348.
There was a Black 348 in Worthing yesterday and it did look great!

Had similar thoughts - New Porsche v used F355. Whilst the car was never going to be the daily driver, bought a new Cayman S in the end and delighted with it. Decided to carry on saving for a 360 Spyder!
How are you finding the Cayman ?
What was your thoughts behind purchasing that model over a 911 (even secondhand)
