Nice cars Friday, could you tell us some real world numbers on total cost to own these cars because monthlies can sometimes be the least of the expense?

Thats good to hear.

Any you hugely regretted or bitten you more than you hoped?

Those 3 cars you've had all seem to have very good residuals and cant see them dropping below the 110/120k mark in next couple of years but of course no one knows what the economy is going to do especially given all that's gone/going on in the world!
A 720s at 145k to me would be the best choice the more I think about it... Prices of those will always be backed up by the 570s,mp4,650s plus the performance per £ it cant be beaten! Will the 720 ever be a 100k car..? I think I'd be pretty happy owning one of those for a couple of years and it cost me 25k in depreciation Plus my monthlies/running costs!

We're only here for one lap!

I've had great experiences with especially the 458 that went up slightly in value and I got out of that one even stevens. The GT3 RS was a bit of a disappointment really I feel they are extremely over valued but was just about able to scrape my money back on that only had it 3 months. The 600 is coming tomorrow so very much looking forward to that. It's a brave man that owns a Macca I think but its under warranty and will be long gone before warranty becomes an issue to renew.

One point about future values, in Evo magazine this month they mentioned McLaren's upcoming new line up-the sports series essentially won't be replaced.

The Artura with it's hybrid tech is moving up a price point, meaning the 720 successor will too.

This could mean a few different things...

One could be that as the sports series won't be available at that price point any more so they may now hold their values, another could be that the 720 replacement is going to be by some margin a lot more expensive so the new model might not depress values in the traditional sense.

Of course, the world could go to hell in a handcart in the meantime but if your man maths is A grade, I'd say the future values of McLarens might be looking better than they previously have been.

Yes indeed if there's no replacement for the entry level cars 150k for a 600lt or 720 starts to look v good value against 250k on an Artura with a 6 pot. 570s at 100 to 110 also start looking good.

I think the ultimate choice for me would be a 720s, for its stunning design, and that performance. Followed by a 600lt a bit more raw and agile for the early morning blasts. And still an AMG GTR the noise and road presence is pretty special and not sure why that is getting no votes considering the reviews seem to be pretty good!

I might be different to others because what I look for in a car is how fun is it to drive at legal speeds on the public road and how does it make me feel when I look back at it and do I grin every time I start it up.

When I was super car hunting I drove 570S, 600LT, 720S, Huracan, 458, 488, GT3 and they were all good but in different ways.

Mclaren some of the finest handling there is, but they sounded woeful and I found them boring at road legal speeds, the 720S was just too capable, 570S moved around a bit more but at 70mph down a B road it was essentially boring. The 488 and F8 were also very similar as well, hugely capable, but also boring at legal speeds.

The Huracan is an orchestra the engine and gearbox is from the gods, but it had the exact same issue, way to damn capable resulting in anything sub 100mph on a public road almost feeling boring, but great sound, great to look at, but an R8 V10 manual is a far better and more sensible buy, same car but with a manual gear box to add to the interaction and meaning some potential fun on the road.

GT3 I came so close to buying one, it has the best engine out of all these cars, the way the tone devlops as the revs build to 9000rpm and its ability is uncanny, but the long gearing is a let down, 75 in second, 105 in third and you naturally want to chase the redline due to way it pulls and sounds, so a naughty car, but reasonly feelsome and fun at legal speeds, just change up at 7000rpm still sounds good.

Back to Ferrari, I drove a 458 and it just stood out, I was what I thought to be flying down a B road to look down at the speedo and only be doing 55mph, this car felt alive in my hands, great steering though somewhat fast which takes a bit of getting used too, the engine nearly sounds as good as the GT3 but with a major difference it has a superior power band, the thing just gets up and goes from 2000rpm and screams all the way to 9000rpm, even better it has really short gearing so you can make use of the amazing DCT gearbox and be legal even if your revving it out but I find the car is amazing fun whether your changing up at 7k, 8k or 9k but the chassis is so alive and moves around, it is such an engaging car and really one of Ferrari's best along with the 812. I purchased a 458 after much test driving and still own it three and half years later, it has hardly depreciated even though I have added 15,000 miles and nothing has gone wrong with it. I am now also fortunate to have added a GT3 alongside it and owning them both and both are amazing but the 458 is the better, more fun and more engaging road car. On track GT3 is a masterclass but nothing drives like a Ferrari and then you look at it, what a car and the dealers really know how to make you feel welcome and look after you.

Your best bet is to drive cars but my advice would be R8 V10 manual, or get on the Ferrari ladder with one of their NA V8 or V12 cars. smile

I also have an Exige 410 20th Edition - totally bonkers car for the road, manual, V6 that screams in something weighing a little over a tonne makes it a huge amount of fun, so maybe one to consider, easy to buy for around 70k and won't lose much money if any now they are no longer in production.

Or join the waiting list for an Emira, I'd go AMG route though as the V6 in the heavier Emira won't feel that rapid.

Similar thoughts on the McLarens to Gibbo although having just bought a 600LT and now driven it wowzers that is a cracking car much more exciting than the 570 its somehow based on.

When I first got a supercar it was a 458 and I picked that as it is known to have a really good gearbox and was one of a very small number of cars that still has hydraulic power steering. Epic car they are a total peach of a thing that's a real event to own and they do drive really well especially with some modern rubber. Superb on track as well. I will get another 458 at some point but I was keen to slot a McLaren in before I do. Started looking at cheap 570s and just got carried away with the budget but the 600LT is an equally exciting car bit quicker than the 458 but nothing beats the instant NA power of that Ferrari V8!

Completely agree about the 410, fabulous fun, great sound, ridiculously fast, and it looks great. There are fewer than 50 20th Anniversary editions in the UK I’m told, so those of us who have one are very fortunate. It’s not a daily, and it’s not easy to get in or out if you’re on the very mature end of the spectrum or if you’re fat. The Emira is basically the Evora in a new dress, doesn’t do much for me but I wish Lotus all the success in the world, they deserve it.

OP was thinking about AMG GTR/570s/991.2TS. Nice cars but if you want a true driver’s experience, visceral sound and serious smile factor with modest running costs, try the 410 before going for any of those.

Another couple of votes for the Exige, that's what I like to read :-)

I tried a 458. lovely car but I got more of a thrill from the 12C at the time, I couldn't get on with the 458 Steering and the 12C felt quicker, but the 458 is a lovely car and always an excellent choice. I bought an F335 which was always my Ferrari of choice but it didn't stay long.

If I was buying a supercar now I would still get the 675LT, however if I was adding another one it would without a doubt be the Superformance GT40. Stands above all other cars I have driven in my memories, its the most visceral and thrilling drive out there and at £180k new is a relative bargain compared to 'resto mods' especially as its a genuine GT40 continuation. She Will Be Mine. Oh, Yes - She Will Be Mine......

Totally agree the only Mclaren I'd consider is the 600LT, it was my favourite to drive and I love the two cooking pots on the rear. The 720S was the fastest car I've ever driven but it was a none event, I don't see the fun in a car that is not fun until your doing 130mph is just useless on a public road, I am in my 40's so the days of wanting the fastest car and racing other cars and speeding with a total dis-regard to the law are long behind me.

I think the only other car I could be tempted by is a Performante but they suffer the same issue, need to be going silly fast to come alive.

Think its why I've stuck with the 458 it is a fun car at all speeds making it ideal as a road car and it has been good reliability wise for me and the brand absolute joy to deal with, lots of free trips, invites etc.

Agree my 410 cost me nothing, the servicing is free as it is less than three years old and I am the second owner of my 410 20th anniversary and the owner before me very kindly has the car covered in PPF, ceramic coated, fitted the AIM digital dash and put a set of Focal Speakers and Kenwood subwoofer in the car and I was lucky enough to stumble on it at a Lotus dealer for 72k with a soft top included with like only 2000 miles before the prices shot up, same car today is 80k plus and like you say a very rare model.

I prefer my 20th anniversary over a 420 final simply because of the beautiful colour coded seats, they look fabulous and my car has all the other 420 upgrades. The 10HP does not worry me as a Lotus engineer basically told me the difference between a 410 and 430 power wise is the same difference as in 1 or 2 pieces of weetabix sir. 430 CUP is more about the aero which is very strong.

My view is a 410, 420 or 430 are incredible cars and you stand to not loose much money and running cost are amongst the cheapest of all cars, been such a lightweight car they return good fuel consumption too.

Also as another consideration if you love noise and performance for the road, Jaguar F-Type SVR, absolute monsters of the line, I took one to VMAX a few years ago and it was eating tuned up GTR's for breakfast of the line and upto 100mph pretty no car could live with it apart from 911 Turbo S and even that upto about 85mph was even.

The problem with any of the V6 Exiges for me are it's just too broadly similar to an Elise/Exige, a car I owned in my late 20s early 30s.

As a supercar, it just wouldn't cut it.

That's exactly how I keep coming back to it. It's a great drivers car, cheaper than a McLaren etc to run but it just doesn't have that car park look back for me. For under £80k it's the car to go for, but when you're looking at up to £150k, it just doesn't have that visual drama which I find is the same for Porsche's…unless you're going GT3RS/GT2RS level.

Everyone is different so it's all a matter of personal opinion on it. I never used to class my GTR as a supercar but some people did as it was faster than some…but it was a big fatty Nissan laugh

Too similar to Radford Type 62 or Hennessey Venom GT for you too I guess? They just don't cut it either I suppose?

Just so you know my Exige 430CUP gets lots more appreciation, thumbs up and starts more petrol station conversations than any supercar I have owned. The general public seem to love them and they don't really care about labels. If they see it and like it that's enough to get them excited. 90% of people have no idea what a 'supercar' is and can't even tell the difference between a Ferrari. McLaren or Lamborghini hence the perpetual 'what is it' every supercar driver gets asked. Unless its a boy of primary school age then every supercar is a Ferrari......

McLaren GT perhaps ? Seems the forgotten car in the range but really nice design imo, 600bhp on tap, the infotainment is a step above a 720s and screen graphics are nice and sharp…and has the usual McLaren pluses of lightweigh carbon tub and silly doors. Most cars still under the original manufacturers warranty too with prices in the 125k-145k range.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, especially when they're about to dump a ton of money on a car. I too am of the opinion that the Exiges are beasts yes, everyone loves them yes, supercars they are not. Ergo, if you're in the market for a supercar, they're probably not going to cut it.

I used to ride road bikes a lot, and one thing I remember was particularly remarkable about the difference with cars. A "superbike" was a very fast road bike, 600cc or more, clearly made with outright speed in mind, with styling to match. Yam R6,R1, Ducatti 999, Ducati 749 , all the GSXRs etc. No one every argued one brand was and one wasn't . How much they cost, and how much they cost to maintain never came into it etiher. I've never head someone say, "your bike doesn't cut it I'm afraid". Such a simpler world :-)

Surely it's time to agree that one person's supercar might not be someone elses', and vice versa. It's down to individuality. That's for sure.

as said before a 458 makes the most sense imo at £120-150k, on a twisty road you'll be going plenty fast enough to scare yourself. it's as much power as needed and has lots of lovely characteristics
