Globally
I would guess that the average Chinese buyer is not a connoisseur.

"Consumer tastes have shifted away from specialist sports cars, with figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showing market share in Britain has fallen by 52 per cent over the past decade."
That's it right there. Sports cars have simply gone out of fashion and a burst of inflation/electrification has screwed down the lid of the coffin.

When I'm out and about on the roads I rarely see any sports cars. Of the ones I do see 99 out of every 100 are Mazda, Porsche or the occasional Jaguar - cars that are real world driveable/parkable in 2023.

Where have the others gone?
  • Flashy cars - sitting in the garage on a trickle charger - very low mileage - take your mates in there to look at it.
  • Classic cars - sitting in the garage on a trickle charger - very low mileage - take it to the pub three summer weekends a year.
I suspect most owners who think they have a valuable asset sitting in their garage will be in for a nasty shock when it comes time to sell. A lot of similar cars will be up for sale at the same time with very few buyers in the market.
Agree with all of this. I took my Maserati Granturismo down to Italy this summer and it generated no real interest (yes, I know it's just a Jag rival GT) but what really surprised me was how few sports cars I saw. Drove 1000 miles before I saw a Ferrari. I saw more Lotus' but that was largely because I stumbled on a dealer somewhere in random Bavaria.

The market has changed and as another poster said, people now buy top of the range SUVs with M, GTS or AMG badges on them. That's what I saw thundering down the autobahn too so it's not just a UK trend.

The fashion bit is pretty relevant, people who buy on that basis (and thats the majority) are in for a shock as you say, the classic car show attendees and the show off to your mates in the garage brigade hehe we’re well rid of..

People who buy and collect simply because ‘they’ love cars and not because ‘others’ love their car, who’s ownership is fek all to do with others.. wont give a monkeys on the value of their cars.

All my cars were worth zero the moment i bought them as they’re priceless to me, remove everybody from the planet and i’d be enjoying them all as much as i do now, if not more as i wouldnt have to put up with stupid questions about them, though i do love the experience of passing slower cars, so i’d miss that, i guess autonomy could take care of that hehe

Some of the comments on here, really are a bit unpleasant.

I've attended a fair few car shows, with my car on display. The fact that I often let kids sit in the car and have their photo taken - which appears to be the highlight of their day - is a positive thing in my opinion. It's less about "flashy" and more about sharing a minor part of the experience with people who may never be able to afford one.

The comments along the general lines that "anybody who doesn't have as much money as me, or enjoy them as a pure drivers car shouldn't own one" are getting a bit tiresome.
We're all different, I'm sure there are many reasons people buy cars like this. Why that makes a blind bit of difference to you while you're enjoying the pure driving experience etc. etc. I have no idea.

Some of you really need to try a little Live and let Live.

Spot on. I also enjoy classic car shows and cars & coffee events. Not only can you see cars that are rare and you would never normally see but you get to meet and chat to owners and hear their stories. I spoke to a chap recently who's family had owned a Hispua Suiza from new, 100 years, amazing tales of trips taken and it was unrestored! Then there is the chap with a 190SL he had for 40 years. Meeting people and seeing amazing cars of all ages and marques is a great way to spend a morning. And usually there is 1-2 hours driving there and back to make a real event of it with your friends. I have the most fond memories of a childhood spent attending car & bike shows with my father.

Cars are a culture are a hobby which sits alongside the driving adventures and is every bit as relevant.

I'm at the lower end of this chat having never bought a car over £100k but I've had nice stuff and take my Granturismo to shows and meets. The thread is about new supercar sales so is bound to attract a range of comments. I think the market has changed for lots of reasons - many highlighted on here - which is a shame as it will reduce the supply of special cars coming down onto the more normal used market over the next decade or so.

Hats off to you and people like you.

I can imagine it's quite wince inducing letting kids climb into your pride and joy at times but I can also imagine how much they get out of it and maybe you've influenced a young mind to be the petrolhead of the future, which can only be a good thing.

Mostly it's fine. I was a tad unhappy when one kid got in the passenger side, and then ran across the seat to the drivers side. I wasn't wildly impressed but got the statement that "well, he does that on my sofa too" from the mum........

Took a bit more care about how they got in after that!

I’m a little bit with Kerniki. I loathe ppl talking to me about my cars and I get v self conscious when/if anybody talks about them being special at all. My stock answer to any enquiry is “it’s just a car”. In fact see my convos with Cake on his 599 thread, it’s just a Donkey. My cars to me aren’t for showing, they aren’t for other ppl, I don’t even like passengers that much. It’s just a car, it’s there for my use/enjoyment as I decide or not. Everybody else is irrelevant to that.
But then I freely admit I don’t like ppl v much and I loathe children. Probably why I have 27 animals and my only kids are goats.

It’s actually a very pleasing frame of mind to be in for car ownershipsmile

But like you say, each to their own beer

I’ve parked up many a time and had kids crawl in my cars, seeing their faces light up as a nice thing, how could it not be, they’re innocent and seeing dreams born at that point is something lovely to see, it happened to me once and hence my passion.. but it’s spontaneous events and not some organised ‘look at my car’ farse, can’t stand that tbh, just creepy, again, each to their own.

True, i like viewing cars at a show, wouldnt be much of a show without the people who like to show off their cars hehe

Doesnt change my opinion about many of those who do though, not all of them but many or most of them are bloody cringey characters.

I don't think they're exclusive to car shows, you get them at all osrt of events. It's just that elsewhere you can bugger off somewhere when you've been served.

Really not into the car shows or coffee meets tbh much prefer an early morning hoon and full English afterwards. Yeah seems the tide is finally turning I'm guessing finance on any new supercar now is over 10%? New car prices seem excessive in general interesting to see what happens over next 12-18 months.

They are not mutually exclusive, as i pointed out a 2 hour 6am hoon to a morning cars and coffee with your mates followed by a 2 hour hoon back in time for lunch. Perfect day driving & meeting like minded people. I am not into single marque meets, can't do a car park full of McLarens or BMW's, needs an eclectic mix to get me interested.

If these events did not exist then car culture and car appreciation would eventually die out. What would music be if it were never live and only experienced through your headphones and without the shared experience of an audience.
