the V10 R8 has the newer better engine, is faster, is cheaper to run and cheaper to buy. The interior is also better.
every rational measure says buy the Audi
yet every time I sit in the G I giggle that I own a Lambo. Or to put it another way, when I'm old a senile and dribbling into my cabbage, which would I regret not having owned?
Somebody else that understands. A supercar is about far more than going fast.every rational measure says buy the Audi

Look at it this way, in 60 years when you have the grandchildren sat on your knee, which story will impress them?
"Let me tell you about the time I had an Audi" or "Let me tell you about the time I had a Lamborghini"
Yes the R8 is an awesome, very capable, car especially in V10 flavor, "super" in every way, just not a supercar.

Obviously the R8 is not in the same league as McLaren but its in a different price bracket so an unfair comparison really, especially regards running costs.
Used my R8 as a daily driver and a good car, fast but not awesome performance.
Liked mine very much and would recommend.
Having been fortunate enough to have owned many sports cars I for one am still shocked at the price point and complete package you get with the R8. The Gen 1 R8 in my experience on the road still gets as much attention (if not more!) as any of the other cars I have had in the past and still have today. And for its price point I genuinely can't think of another car that offers so much value.Used my R8 as a daily driver and a good car, fast but not awesome performance.

After spending nearly 10 years on the Porsche and Ferrari (both marques which I love) bandwagon, the last 5 of which have seen prices grow to silly levels which in no way reflect the ownership experience (not saying they're not great to own, they just don't really make sense at the price), it's been a breath of fresh air to go out and buy a lovely lightly used manual R8 V10 for a price beginning with a 5. Bargain of the decade IMO

Completely agree with you on the prices of Porsche / Ferrari. I love my 360 - but I wouldn't buy it at current prices. I seem to recall upsetting a few people on the CS forum when I made the same comment about the 348 - nice car, but not one I'd pay £50k for.

Tell you what, the people saying the R8 is ‘meh’ must have driven some decent cars! It’s a beautiful hand built car with a mid engined v8 or v10https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
The Gallardo doesn’t attract this comment despite the v10 r8 being fairly similar. Yes it’s a Lambo.

I don't think anyone has said the R8 is "meh" have they? If they have they must be a bit simple or are just trolling.
R8 is a bargain for what you get really BUT as said previously there is a reason it's a bargain. It's not because someone at Audi needs to be told that they could be selling it for the same price as the Gallardo....
It is not a criticism of the R8, it is simply saying that there is something ineffable about the Lambo that isn't there with the R8. There is for some people though, obviously, just as someone who is really into their GTRs would staunchly describe them as a supercar, or "supercar killers".
It's not brand snobbery either, I don't think, because the R8 isn't exactly cheap either. It is just something that is hard to explain.
I'm between supercars at the moment so I currently just blast around in a TTRS, and there are a lot of similarities between that and the R8 - again in my opinion. The switchgear is for the most part identical, for example, and the TTRS is not a million miles away in terms of performance.
I thnk the R8 is a lovely looking car and I would definitely be keen on one, but I can't imagine it would be something that I would take the cover off and immediately have butterflies in my stomach before I've even opened the door. Different strokes for different folks though.
