I will probably be excommunicated for saying this but I really don't like the wheels on the 550 Barchetta.
Far too fussy for my tastes

I agree with you Chris. Saw the Barchetta at the NEC two years ago, there was also a TdF blue 550, both with these wheels. At the time I thought they looked crap in comparison to the original 550 alloys.

In september falling out of a pub in Nurburg I saw a barhetta with 20 inch wheels, totally different design, looked the bollox.

cheers

288 GTO - gorgeous. Basically twin turbo nutter - and the handling should be kept in context with when it was launched.

One of my most exhilorating Ferrari experiences ever - achingly beautiful, awesomly purposful, and when the turbo's kicked in - you wanted the front tyres to be pointing straight!

What a car!

The F40 is basically a development of the 288GTO.

I love them (both!)

re: 550 Barchetta - yep - it's a temp. roof - although the Sultan of Brunei has - check this out - a couple of these in the UK WITH (old shape) Merc SL hardtops welded on. Saw the black one a couple of weeks ago - looked okay.

Bloody Hell! You don't need much encouragement do you Already running a book; mmmm might have a (fecking enormous) flutter myself (under an assumed name of course). Which one had the longest odds? F50 at 10s was it Ajay? *almost* worth it.

This thread's a damned interesting read, but sorry to disappoint you guys, this wouldn't be an addition to the stable, it would be a replacement; one or both would have to go. So it has to stack up as a stark choice. But it won't be an F50 (yet) Manu they're just too much money and you've seen where I live: can you see me getting an F50 down the main street. Neither can I.

Always fancied a 288 though, to drive not just to look at. How d'you know they're unreliable Manu? That would be the kicker for me- I can hack this when I've retired but not when free time is precious. Sorry Trackdemon but a 500 mile round trip becomes a lot less glamorous if 250 of them are on the back of an AA lorry. A 308 with the 288 rear panel sounds less like a fake than the best of both worlds.

On the basis of current evidence, Ajay is closest to the mark actually. And that Lancaster car is unregistered.

PS Ajay, what odds will you give on Steves' flatnose?

A friend of my dad has a 288GTO since 1984. Never driven it myself, but had a passenger ride in it

That was before the day one of the turbo chargers (or something near it) caught fire during normal driving
Owner took the GTO to Modena the same day to get it repaired. Nutter.

He said that it is a common problem to the 80s GTOs - indeed more of the non-surviving cars burnt themselves than being crashed He always carries a fire extinguisher in all his cars since that day.

I see, it could be the autoscout24.com offered one, because it's the first car delivered to Germany.

I have sat in and seen the Barchetta in the flesh at Lancaster and it is absolutely stunning car in every way. All thge cars there take my breath away really (and my cash).

They had a F40 there being serviced a few months ago and they took me into the workshop for al looky see.

I love them too. Saw a well raced/used F40 at Beaulieu las Sunday as well and it was awesome. Hearing peoples comments about the car as they walked past was brilliant.

Kevin,

Unfortunately payment was received via transfer from the Bank of Manu so at todays exchange rate as listed on FT.com it amounts to 1 shilling and half pence.

I know that your next Ferrari is going to be a 550 or 550 barchetta, I know it!!!

As for betting on you buying Steve's flatnose I know everyone would have a punt at that seeing as its a dead cert so I'll make a loss!!! Only way for me to make some dosh out of that one would be to bribe Steve not to sell it to you!! But I know the result of that will be

Have maintained two beautiful examples. Absolutely the most rewarding car to drive. You really feel like you've got the most out of one, without risking life an limb to do it.

The relatively high profile tyres make them much more forgiving than an F40. And keep a trailng throttle and/or left foot brake to reduce turbo lag.

Awesome, fricking awesome.

I phoned my fiancee while on rad test once and she put it on speaker phone.....she worked in a cop shop at the time! They loved it too!

Manu said:Jay - GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE !!!!(recently a friend of mine introuced me to the phrase "fools never differ" )

The F50 is WAYYYYY superior to the F40 and I've actually come to prefer the way it looks - which is - in my opinion UNBELIEVABLE - no it's NOT pretty (not in the way the GTO is) but then neither was the F40 - but it DOES look the way a £300,000 car ought to look - some of th shutlines on the (fantastic) F40 are shocking - like a kit-car.
It's not exactly a depreciating asset either seeing as there are only 350 in the world.- VS the ~1300 for F40 and 272 for the GTO.
It's quicker than the McLaren f1 round a track and if you don't like it in my opinion, you haven't seen/heard or driven one (yeah righty!!) often enough!

The GTO actually started the love affair with Ferrari - I LOVE THIS CAR - and I mean that - but I'm just a young pup (as Kev would say) and I want ......... brute force, naturally aspriated F1-derived V12 - (not 2.8 litre twin turbo) with HYPER performance.

F50 VS 288GTO (money no object quick poll everyone?)

So perfectly put Manu

Kev:
I can't believe your contemplating selling one or both of those Ferraris. I know I couldn't bring myself to do it

Jay.
p.s. Should you decide to part company with the 360, please, please let me know, as I'm dieing for one last "hoon". This time with camera/video/nappy

Kev, I see you'll be over at VW on Sunday - please tell me your bringing the 456! I LOVE these car's, never heard one with a 'proper' exhaust. 12 Ferrari cylinders must sound fantastic, and besides I've seen your (admitedly awsome) 360 already...
