The 348 IMO is one of the worst looking street-use Rari's but I'd have one over a 911 every day . . . A 70s 911 RS would be top though . . .

I dont agree - a 348 to me looks better than a 355 and a 360 , 430 better though... but at 25 a 348 could be afforded in a few years a 430.... hmm maybe never

996 - heaven

I had a 348ts for 5 years and it was one of the early models, never really gave me many problems apart from the battery and that was because it had not been driven for 4 weeks. Used to use it quite often and take it to work on ocasions 90 mile round trip.

Never had to spend that much on it really apart from cambelt change and a new clutch but that is to be expected.

So if it tickles your fancy go for it. You only live once, make the most of it

having owned 3 ferraris, they have all proved to be completely and utterly unreliable and expensive to maintain,,,,without the rewarding driving ability i have found with my porsches....harsh but fair..Des.

Get the Porker - the 348 is the WORST looking mid engined ferrari (well....except the Mondial)

Gotta disagree with you man. I dont know people dont like the 348's looks. Personally I think it looks great. Plus the Mondial is also very underrated. Fine its no 456, but then half the price. Plus as far as im aware its the only its the only mid engined 4 seater. Also it let us not forget the Mondial t was Enzo's last car. (Yes I am a bit bias!)

Early days but finding the Cayman to be absolutely superb in every respect. Handling and steering really are sublime, and in the real world the on-road performance is very close to a basic 997.

We are trying to choose between cars that are ten years apart.
The fact that the 348 can be considered a worthy counnterpart to a 996 speaks for itself.

As for the looks of the 348. I think they still look eyecatching on the road now.

The benchmark for me is when driving on a motorway i notice a car on the opposite carriageway, and a 348 caught my eye a few days back heading southbound M1. A beautiful Rosso spider.....

So what does this list look like then? 3 Ferraris', Porsches' etc.

Or are they 1:18?

Having owned a 348 for 18 months I feel reasonably qualified to pass comment.

Firstly, looks. Looks are a subjective issue - some will like it and some won't. I personally find the looks of a 348 very appealing - lets remember here that the sheet metal and glass were basically carried straight over onto the 355, widely regarded as a very pretty car. Ok, some don't like the side strakes (preferring the 355's door design) but remember that the 348 was the Testarossa's little brother, and hence carried over some significant design details. The Testarossa was a semminal 'bedroom wall poster' car for a lot of us, and never once have I ever heard "I love the Testarossa, but I wish it didn't have side strakes on it". Yet people always say this of the 348......odd.

WRT reliability, mine has been very good. The car needed a new clutch when I got it, which I knew about. At the same time I had a service performed and all the little niggles (that many owners would ignore or not realise were there) sorted. Since then I've had an ignition pack and a starter motor replaced, but other than that, nothing. My 54 plate Impreza has had more issues electrically than my Ferrari.

Cambelt change is due now, and I'll twin this with major service. This will run me abut £2k, but won't need doing again for three years or mileage that I will never achieve!

In terms of an everyday car, I wouldn't want to drive my 348. I like leaving it as something special, and I'm not convinced it would be a nice everyday drive. The driving position isn't great, and others here have highlighted potential practicality issues (that said, I can still take it for a light shop to M&S or a run to the bottle bank!!)

On this playing field a Porker will win hands down - better driving position, rear 'seats' (of sorts) etc etc.

However, drive them down the road, and the reaction from passers by will tell you all you need to know about how special they are. My car is 13 years old. Is worth probably £25k on a good day. Is not tremendously fast by modern standards (my scoob would tear it apart to-110), yet nothing I have ever driven gets the same reaction.

By contrast, my best friend has a 996 Turbo. 54 plate, stunning condition, worth £60k. No one, and I mean no one even looks at his car if I am following or leading him. People love a ferrari because they are in a league of their own.

Oh, and bad handling? A lttle edgy on the limit, agreed, but they do reward the skilled driver

I have a view on this, and the circumstances upset me slightly 'cos - well, difficult to explain, but they just do. Anyway;

I finally managed to get to the 'Ring for the first time properly last year. Was there over a bank holiday weekend, a very busy time. There were hordes of 911's, absolutely hordes of them, and of course, for very good reasons. But sadly, there wasn't one single Ferrari. Over three days I never saw one Ferrari, not on track nor in the surrounding areas. I saw lots of one-offs of other cars, including a swiss reg. Tiv in the wet, and a honda-engined Minivan, a Weissmann, a Carrera GT and so on. But not one Ferrari.

Now in May I shall go to the Monaco historic races, and like last time, in Casino square on the Fri and Sat nights there will be hordes of Ferraris. Do you get my drift?

I gain no pleasure from this post but thats the way it was and it would be a major influence in my decision in this choice of cars. I simply know which type of enthusiast I would want to align myself with.

If its any consolation to you ferrari guys, I don't think they let any Porkers park in Casino square 'cos they're just so common!

Wise mans choice is the Porsche, i personally think the 348 is a very nice looking car, was minutes from buying a titanium 348 spyder from talacrest that was featured in one of my car mags that month many moons passed, salesman was too smug for me so I just walked away, bought a clio 1.2 and put a deposit down and waited for something else. Old ferraris always have a fear factor regarding upkeep.
