Silverstone classic first time - tips?
Discussion
I'm there both days and have attended the last 7 years or so
Porsche club have a huge area laid out but it does fill so get there reasonably early.
Racing wise I love the 50s & 60s muscle cars, the Minis (classics) and the touring cars.
Pits are all open and it's great to wander round, chat to the drivers, mechanics and get up close and personal to some fantastic machines (race prepped Aston DB1 or Ferrari 250 for example )
Theres a great array of car clubs as well so loads to wander about and look at.
2 years ago a great line of 7 or 8 Macca F1s, F40LM, Porsche GT1 etc.
Last year IMHO was a bit of a let down with poor racing and grid line ups so hopefully they've now sorted that out.

It's a huge site, it takes forever to get anywhere - from the old pits to the new pits, from a viewing point to another viewing point outside the circuit ( I can't think of any decent viewing points inside the circuit).
Just one day - You have to decide what your priorities are and what you want to see; you can get close to the race cars in both the old and new pits and paddocks,
and the club strands are good if you want to see dozens of similar examples of a marque.
I think that Silverstone is a st circuit for viewing; because in all but very few places you are so far from the action.
Outside of Maggotts is my favourite place to spectate.

Take comfy shoes and Nurofen for back ache, you do a bloody lot of walking.
I would also take your own food, the food stalls are a rip off as with most big events.
I make up a nice picnic hamper. It can be windy at Silverstone and its been known to rain so cater for all conditions.
Getting in and out of the place is a Nightmare, Just don't understand why there are not more entrances around more parts of the circuit. Usual Brit planning

I'm also a first timer, going on Saturday and will be there early as we are staying Friday night in the Jersey Arms near Bicester.
I have to pick up our tickets from the Ticket Collection Box in Car Park 50A and don't know how to find it, the Silverstone Classic website does not seem to have a circuit map, does anyone know where I could download one or can anyone point me in the right direction please.

Yep, I've sussed out the same thing now so all should be good.
As an aside, my son in law was building the James Hunt Memorial stand this week and arranged the free weekend tickets for us. Unfortunately I already had a golf day booked for tomorrow and we have to be back home for Saturday evening so if anyone local to Silverstone would like them to use on Sunday let me know and I can pass them on when we leave the circuit.

PM sent Trevor.I'd agree to do the three days if you can, much easier to get to see all the differing races that way.
Make sure to wander though the garages, be polite, but you can get very close and most drivers and crews are happy to natter.
The food stalls can be brilliant, and not over priced compared to other events, the goose fat potatoes last year and the Argi BBQ the year before being standouts.
Use the circuit busses they're brilliant.
My other tip would be to book off the Friday for next year now, save yourself the trouble of doing it later.

Not that it'll help the OP now but my tip if you can only make one day would be to go for the Saturday and camp Saturday night, generally the best events are on the Saturday and camping allows you to enjoy the full day + some drinks! That's what I'm doing this year, I generally stay at Whittlebury park, you can book camping through Silverstones site but its £50 per person, Whittlebury is less than £40 per pitch..Make sure to wander though the garages, be polite, but you can get very close and most drivers and crews are happy to natter.

Just checked my emails and haven't seen anything yet, leaving the South Coast to do the drive to Bicester now and will check again when I get to the hotel, if there's nothing then I'll pm you my mobile number and you can call me tomorrow morning to make arrangements. And just in case the PM system is playing up, I'll leave my number with your hotel.
Okay Ian, further to our telephone conversation, I've just checked the map and it looks like the Oxford Services on the M40 is not too far from you and is also on our way home. We'll put that in the satnav when we leave Silverstone tomorrow which will give us an eta, I'll call you when we leave and we can meet there if that's okay with you, probably sometime between 4.30 and 5,30pm.
