After the great success of the last PH Clay shoot at Bisley last month, it was suggested that we have another shoot in the next month or two.

Some suggested that we use the Sandon shooting ground like we did last November, it's 10 mins from j9 A1, near Baldock.

We can only shoot on a Saturday, so if people could post up any Saturdays in July and August that they can't do, we'll try to pick a date that suits as many as possible!

We propose to run a "simulated pigeon shoot" which is a little different from the traditional Trap or English Sporting layout. It involves the shooter not knowing when & where the clays are coming from, much like a real pigeon shoot! You carry on shooting until you're told to stop!

Because of the style of shoot, we won't be able to accommodate COMPLETE novices, although it's suitable for people who have only shot a few times before, even if they didn't hit very many!!!!

Cost will be £25 for 100 clays. Cartridges will cost from £12/100

Nice idea Clive, I'll be up for this as long as I can borrow a gun again...car purchases and house repairs have eaten up the gun-fund, so I've got to start that again from scratch!

Pretty sure I'm clear for every Saturday except 11th August so far.

Cheers,

Martin.

No problem re: borrowing a gun! Let's hope we can get a few PHers along!

And sorry Charlie, I know Saturdays are bad for you, but unfortunately it's the only day we're allowed to shoot due to Local Authority regs!

I'd be up for that seeing as it's about 5 minutes from my house, does anyone know if they loan guns there? as i've shot before but have no licence
Borrowing a gun won't be a problem and cartridges will be available on the day.

The only issue is that shooters are confident enough to shoot unsupervised due to the nature of the targets. It'll be like shooting a "flush", you won't know which direction the clays will be coming from, nor when they are coming.......just like live pigeon shooting! The format is great fun, and not something that is usually available at most shooting grounds!

The reason we can't accommodate complete novices is that it takes quite a long time to teach people from scratch which results in a lot of standing around for everyone else.Usually it's not a problem because there are plenty of other stands to shoot, but the format for this shoot means there's only one stand, and TBH the targets will be quite "testing"!

How far is Baldock from Gloucestershire?
It took me an hour and a half last Sunday to get to Cheltenham.

I would expect myself to be bit crap at first, but still wouldn't mind the chance to have a go...
I think it's all a little academic, I've just checked and it seems it's a mere 196 miles from Wigan to Sandon and will only take you circa 4 hours.....each way!!!!

I'm sure you're keen as mustard.......in fact, if you do make the journey, I'll make an exception for you, and we'll ensure you get the best tuition we can muster!

It looks like the only two dates that haven't been crossed off the list are 28th July and 4th August.

Are there any preferences?

Do either of these dates clash with any other important events?

Hi chaps any chance of moving the venue further north so some of us can can join in myself and another TVR owner are keen clay shooters we live in Cheshire, how about somewhere in the middle say Doveridge?
Better still why dont you guys come north to our shooting ground (North Wales Shooting School)at sealand manor near Chester www.shootingschool.net Make a day of it they have a club house and may put food on.smile
Much as I'm sure we'd all love to venture North, I think it's probably a little impractical for most of us. It's only 186 miles each way from my place to NWSS, and a mere 7 hour round trip!

The majority of participants are quite a long way further south than I am!

Are we all still on for this then ? August 4th?
Of course we're still on for this! thumbup

Especially now Dave's joined the fray.......and he's shot the layout before (not that it will help him much though biggrin)

If everyone's OK about times, I suggest we start at 11am, which gives everyone plenty of time to get there. I'll e-mail directions to all those that are coming.

As usual,12g & 20g cartridges will be available on the day, if you're bringing your own, fibre wads only please!

PS Dave, your e-mail on your profile is invalid!!!! Next "regular" shoot is 21st July.

Quick question Clive - what's the proposed start- and end-times for this?

We're having trouble organising Mrs Havoc's 30th party the weekend after, and are thinking about bringing it forwards a week, want to check I could still fit both in...

Cheers,

Martin.
Martin

If we start at 11 I would expect us to be finished about 1 ish. We can always put you on 1st for the last set of 25 birds so you can get away promptly. It's always a lot quicker in this format because everyone shoots 25 in a row, so that cuts the amount of changeover time dramatically! It doesn't seem that there's going to be a huge number of us anyway. If people want to shoot more than 100, they should be able to anyway, they'll just pay a pro-rata for the extra birds.

Can you email directions at some point this week Clive?- i seem to have lost your previous emails. I seem to remember that the satnav went to the wrong side of the farm......
Yes mate, not a problem! I'll e-mail all those who've said they're coming via their PH profile.......please check your e-mail addresses are current folks!!!!

I won't quote the postcode in my e-mail 'cos as you've rightly pointed out my Saab steeded friend, the postcode makes satnav take you to the wrong end of the farm, so it's back to good old written directions!

If anybody hasn't received directions by Wednesday, please e-mail me via my profile.

Actually with hindsight, this should have a thread of its' own, especially as it's going to be in the Berkshire area. Remember though that they only run mid-week, so many will need to take a day off/chuck a sickie! I've shot at every estate that RBSS offer, and they are all wonderful places!

If you don't shoot 500 cartridges in the day....you're not trying! It may "seem" expensive, but it's probably the best "value" shooting you'll do! I've been on at least 20 of these days over the past few years, and I've never failed to have a brilliant day!

It will take some organising, but it'll be worth it! I'm at RBSS tomorrow so I'll speak to Dylan and see the minimum number we'll need. Normally it's 12, or at least it has been when we've taken "our own day" rather than joining a "roving day"

The only downside is that come September they don't run them as all the estates are game shoots as well! But obviously they start up again in February, so maybe aim for a March/April date?
