No-one has mentioned an 18 year old adding a map to their insurance??

Come on PH! I’m shocked.

Do what you want OP but it’s not going to sound how you want it to.

If you want genuine anti lag to spool the turbo off throttle which gives pops and bangs then yes do it if you have the requisite hardware, if you're just mapping in some fuel off throttle to get pops and bangs you're a chav tool

If you are 18, all is forgiven. Make it as noisy as you possibly can.

probably best.

everyone runs around in fiesta's, audis, polos etc with same ste pop and bang map.

it just makes it sound like st.

manufacturers put them in to make crap exhausts sound better smile

just put a nice sounding system on or best of all go with good intake, that'll sound good too!

also insurance at 18 with remaps and mods in general will not be great.

yes You might well find it cheaper to buy and insure a V6 TT than insure a modified inline-4 one.

For an 18 year old a 1.8 turbo is a really beefy engine!

Pops and bangs dont damage a engine but they will reduce turbo life if used non stop. Also sounds about as chav as it gets.

It's a four cylinder turbo.

The exhaust will always sound crap.

I'm not being snobby about this. I used to have a Turbo Esprit, which also sounded crap.

Instead of looking at the exhaust, why not do something with the induction side of things? The least uninspiring noise my Esprit made was its snarly induction.

Can you make it switchable?

My Impreza has antilag but its on a switch so only on when I'm off on a good road (or a tunnel) and isn't bloody annoying wherever I go. Similarly with my i30N you only get the bangs in sport/N mode and even then only if you are giving it stick at high rpm so again not a pain to everyone all the time.

There is a guy lives near me with a Golf R with what must be a near straight through exhaust with the worst map Ive ever heard. Big vag fart on every gearchange and every time he lifts off it just crackles continuously, so friggin loud, scares the hell out of my dog. He thinks its the coolest thing ever but it just sounds really broken. God only knows how he puts up with driving it like that all the time. Seen a fair few BMWs the same too.

OP, buy a TVR, most of the miserable old gits on here won't moan about the pops and bangs that makes.

Not many people, realise this,, but..

If you fold the rear seats down it lowers the centre of gravity loads.

And the light from neons underneath the car sucks it closer to the ground for even more stability round the corners..
The poster who said that (years ago) didn't just claim it lowered the centre of gravity, he also claimed it actually reduced the weight of the car....due to spreading the weight of the seats over a larger area, physics fail 101.

There's a VXR Astra that passes my abode. I didn't appreciate it when it did a gunshot like backfire at 6.30 am.

I had a 2003 Leon Cupra with this engine in 180hp guise and I think it made quite a nicely burbly sound on the standard exhaust and map (for a 4 cylinder..).

So rather than fannying about with maps, maybe just try a cheapish (non-offensive) cat back exhaust first and see if you like it?

Where I used to live there was a young lad with a pop and crackle exhaust who used to drive everywhere making the loudest noise he could, hard throttle, no throttle. Never neutral throttle. It was awful and genuinely anti social. One day I walked past his house and every window of his car had been put though. I'm certain it was a naughty resident who decided to out anti social the anti social noise. So yeah, all pop and crackle maps can damage your car.

As a 40-something with NCB and no claims, insurance on a mapped 1.8T was expensive enough. Christ knows what it would cost for an 18 year old!

Not strictly true - maybe for the OP's engine, but engines with Alusil lined bores can suffer bore damage.

Is your car running a Maram shaft to cope with the extra heat?

Depending on the level of remap, it can damage the cat. Some over fuel the cylinders to help keep the cylinder temps down but when you accelerate hard, you may see some extra puff from the exhaust. That goes through the cat which won't last all that long. If you really want snap, crackle and pop, a 5 cylinder engine is the way forward to start with.
