Q7 - Broken fragments of crankshaft shells - repair or scrap
Discussion
Hi all. Thanks for your help. I've uploaded a couple of photos of the fragments. The other thing I should have mentioned is that the car previously had the code 'loss of crankshaft synchronisation'. The mechanic who looks after it always put that down to a bad sensor given it was always running perfectly. Still at a loss of what to do at the moment... Every option seems a bit of a minefield
How do you go about that? Do places source and fit? My bloke says he can fit but I have to source because he doesn't want to be liable in case the engine is a dud. I think I can sell for 7, 8k as a non runner but it's worth over 20 without issues. Does a new second hand engine impact on the value of the car? Sorry for all the questions
I would guess the crankshaft correlation was the beginning, usually it means the timing is out, chain stretch, tensioner starting to fail etc
As for the engine if its worth 8k scrap or 20k running take the scrap, by the time you have swapped bits over, got an engine, paid labour and crossed you fingers it starts your going to be into 10k.
As for where to star, someone like - either a specialist breaker or Synetiq.

Never understand fitting used engines, an engine of unknown parentage, removed by a couple of lads at a muddy breakers, what's the chance of it being better than a full service history original engine that failed?
Years ago when engines were cheaper, cars where cheaper, things were simpler...this whole process was also simpler. It is a tough call. Compounded yes by finding an actual good engine, although there will be plenty out there in crashed vehicles etc
But then there is the massive hurdle of finding someone reliable and competent to do the swap. IMO find that first, somewhere who will guarantee, and then you might be onto something
Unless it is ridiculously difficult, the sump still needs to come off to get a better idea of what's going on.
The photos aren't great, TBH not convinced that is bearing material, but just too dark to see
I remember this fix or scrap dilemma with an old van, and sourced a motor from a local breakers.
Asked if he had heard it running and he assured me it was 'sweet as a nut'
Paid up front and he told me it would be removed from vehicle by next week and wait for the call..two and a bit weeks later he calls me to refund - he had just noticed a big hole in the block where the con rod had let go !

I wasn't confident about getting the engine repaired and I definitely wasn't confident about locating a decent second hand engine and then getting it fitted by someone decent so sold it as a non-runner. I managed to get 10k and as it was pointed out, I would have ended up spending that to replace. Lease will be the way forward for me I think! 😂
