question about leak off pipes / leak off system

i have an iveco daily 2.8 c11 on a 52 plate (bosch common rail)

the red injector light started to flash and the van would cut out, according to a friend who used to run a fleet of theese as a tarmacing firm (motorways not carvan sites i'll Add) said it'd be the pump on the ns of the chasis i swapped this with a good one and it was no better.

i was advised to remove the leakoff pipes and run the van and see if an injector was leaking excessivly . non were leaking.

whilst the van was running there was fuel coming out of the leak off pipes which werent connected to the injectors, now i thought this was a one way thing the excess fuel comes out of the injector and back to the pump/filter depending on the vehicle.

i reassembled everything and run it no injector light and no cutting out very strange i know.

so why was there fuel pouring out of the disconected leak off pipes?

then back to the tank/filter?

this was pumping back up though surely it would take the easiest and most direct route?

So there must be a blockage if it's coming back up to the injectors then????
