Renault starter motor problem

Hi,
Problem with a 1999 Renault 1.6 16 valve petrol engine;
I recently changed the starter motor (pre-engaged type) because of poor starting (worn brushes), new motor much better but occasionally takes a few attempts to start with symptoms of pinion not engaging with ring gear. Car sees daily use on school run so ~ four starts a day. Is it likely that the ring gear could be worn? The sections I could see or fell with the starter motor off felt OK. Any other likely causes for this behaviour?
Motor was a sod to get at, tucked away behind heat shield etc.

Interesting comment Steve; when I went to the factors for the starter motor there were two types available (always the way!) the one which looked identical had slightly different pinion size IIRC, we checked both replacement motors out and the one fitted looked to be the same as far as pinion / mounting arrangement.Steve

wear usually occurs in one area over a couple of dozen teeth where the engine predominantly settles when its switched off.
