Cold air Intake (LS2)
Discussion
This really applies to all of the engines to be honest but I've been looking at cold air feeds for the Monaro and there appear to be the "typical" K&N solutions available which take the feed from the same place the airbox does but in Australia I noticed these rather aggressive looking over radiator intakes that take the air directly from the front.
In terms of performance it would seem logical to assume the straight from the front options with the way to go I was curious if anyone had looked into this or tried it themselves. Naturally the solutions for the straight from the front are more expensive than the cone filters.

The general consensus is that they see an improvement at higher speeds, maybe 90, 100+ but there's not much in it at normal speeds.
My IATs seem to drop to ambient levels very quickly once moving, I don't know for comparison how quickly the cone filters drop though having only gone from stock to OTR.
There are more VXR8s with the OTR I'd guess as Monkfish supply one, Monaro wise the list is fairly limited I believe, jwoodvxr had a SvedeSpeed on his now sold VXR, KMud has an X-Air one on his CV8, and I have a SvedeSpeed on my VXR. I'm sure there's more though?
ringram had one on his huge engined VXR8, and it was in fact a limiting factor due to a lack of filter area to feed his power habit (~500rwhp I think?)
Old pic here of mine

I have a SvedeSpeed too Agree with Sturdy- IATs drop very quickly to ambient once on the move. At Thunder Road, my IATs were 40-45c on the start line, but quickly dropped to ambient by the time I was at 40-60mph.My IATs seem to drop to ambient levels very quickly once moving, I don't know for comparison how quickly the cone filters drop though having only gone from stock to OTR.

My IATs were up to 69'C in line at TR, but my sensor is in the OTR, right over the radiator. I realise this thread is LS2-specific, but I think opinions (and performance) of OTRs may be coloured by IAT sensor location. I was in fourth before the heat-soaked sensor wasn't commanding pulled timing.KMud said:

Wow that's one meaty looking engine there, are you using coil brackets (MSD) too? I saw them online but wasn't sure what the benefit of those was either.
Nope, stock coilpacks, I just painted the brackets red (they're black now as it would've clashed with my fuel rails, and I'm a tart )mikeyb1987 said:

Ah yes, course you do Pics required Love your motor Gareth I've got some fun winter plans that I'm acquiring some bits for already, can't wait

Yes Please.Run 1 (bonnet stayed shut in queue):
MPH - Temp (c)
0 - 60
60 - 60
76 - 37
104 - 37
124 - 24
130 - 24
Run 2 (bonnet open in queue):
MPH - Temp (c)
0 - 44
52 - 44
78 - 34
101 - 34
138 - 24
I would've expected the temps to come down steadily, not in stages. The above is from a playback of the log, so it may be that the playback is a bit jerky! Definitely worth keeping the bonnet up if running an OTR though.

Ben was correct re when the temps reduced, I was obviously just spouting bull

At 0 mph with the cone off to the side I get 27*C then at Max speed I got 25*C
So only 2* variation, that also means I wont have pulled any timing, at least initially. Though at WOT in 5th I got some KR.
So way less heatsoak as it doesnt sit on the radiator, even though its a metal intake pipe.
Also min Kpa was 96 which is bad as max was 98, though I didnt get a key on reading to see what atmos was.. Did anyone?
Sorry to hijack but mickeyb1987: did your VXR already have the Svede Speed on it when you bought it? Trying to find-out what happen to my old VXR after I sold it & I'm wondering if it's now with you:
