My R8 blew its engine today......
Discussion
Waiting to get it hauled upto AAS next week to let them have a look. It started misfiring for a few miles, then when i slowed for a roundabout it made a very loud metallic rattle then cut out. Crank wont turn. Gut instinct says the timing chain has snapped. Any thoughts? Possible costs if it is worse case scenario? Cheers in advance.
Worst worst is an engine, which is just over £5k + fitting, less what ever you can get for the wrecked engine.
I know how you feel, it's not nice - but you can be thankful that it's probably the cheapest car with this sort of power to have a major problem with.
Good luck, and I hope it's something less serious, like a dropped valve.

This is the original R8, not Audi (who arrogantly decided that they could just use the name, even though it was already taken).
My bad! Fekking orrible mistake!Edit: It just sounded so audi-like car, engine blew and money gone.

But obviously if it doesn't mate it will need doing.
Could it knack the engine
Basically it is a two part pulley, the inner metal hub that goes on the crank and then a second pulley is attached which has a 4mm thick rubber insertion inside, then the both are glued together, if you look at your pulley when on tick over, the inner part will be running true, it will be the outer pulley that is glued on which will be wobbling, I have not known them totally delaminate on these cars but have read that they have done on corvettes, probably because they have covered much higher miles.Could it knack the engine

Thank you snowwolf. So would that still mean it needs changing or I'd that normal
I think if everyone looked at their harmonic balancer (crank pulley) they would all have some degree of wobble, it wouldn't need doing asap but I suppose if your car is in having some work done then think about having it done if you have the spare cash, not the cheapest items to do, think a new pulley is about £200Gassing Station | HSV & Monaro | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
