V. Cheap Toyo tyres.
Discussion
I was just searching through all the various tyre sites on the web and came across this.
Toyo have a surplus of the older T1 S tyres after the launch of the T1 R and they are going dirt cheap. I had the T1 S on my previous car and they were supereb.
I just bought 2 275/35/18s for £200 delivered. Unfortunately some of the more common sizes are sold out but if you fancy trying something new without spending a mint, have a look.

It's like Ringram said, I'll let you know when they go on. I would wager they will be ok for the majority of trips but may rub ever so slightly fully loaded. Watch this space!> 275s for the back. Undecided for the front. Slightly larger but not sure what yet. 265/35/18s might be nice if they'll fit.

275's are on!!! No rubbing, even with a passenger in the back (not had a full load yet). Will post pics if people are interested. Grip is phenominal even in the wet. It was dry when I had them put on and the Toyos performed very well. The heavens opened this afternoon and (though I was a little edgy with the throttle) the tyres were great in the wet too.
Slight bulge at the wall with them being so wide but nothing too much (will save the alloys from the missus anyway).
There should be just as much room on the Monaro as my HSV so all that want to could fit these.
Fronts next, maybe 255 / 265???

should have got some 345's for the back, even more grip

Woody have you checked on other HSV/Holden forums to see if any others run such wide tyres on what I assume are standard rims?
Just asking, as I suspect that under hard cornering the standard rims could move around in such an oversized tyre. If this was the case, there would be a negative effect on handling & could even push the tyre off slightly, resulting in a loss of pressure.
Ideally, for ultimate handling you want minimum tyre roll i.e when the tyre is at the correct pressure the tyre wall should be level with the rim, or even sloping slightly inward but defo. no bulge.
Also, have you considered the possible insurance consequences? They could wriggle on a claim etc.

Bulge really is minimal. The fitter was a little concerned when I turned up with such big boots and expressed the same concerns as you. After fitting however, he was very suprised at how well they went on and seemed to think they shouldn't be too much of a problem. I see what you're getting at though and looking back, 265 probably would have been a marginally better choice on an 18 x 8 but I'll see how it goes. A major factor in the purchase of 275 was the price, £200 for the pair delivered and this was also the size that offered the least deviation from std diameter. I'm running 36psi for now, I think that should be okay.
What do you suggest for the front?

135/65/13's are cheap

Really I think 275 section on an 8 inch rim is oversised for the rim as that tyre should be on 9 to 10.5" dia. the tyre co I use would not put that tyre on such a rim for safety reasons.
See:www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
At the front I would not go further than 245/40/18 IMHO

Last September, I paid £99 (inc. vat & fitting) for 235/40/18 Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres from Protyre in Bristol.
I wouldn't increase the size at all, unless I was fitting wider rims. HSV did a lot of testing & fettling to achieve a (IMO) really good comprise between fine handling & comfort.
I know Pomona fitted wider 18" Ronal(iirc) rims with success.
I was always amazed by the huge amount of traction my GTS's had, even with well over 500bhp,especially compared to the likes of the E55 AMG & M5 which have much wider rear tyres. The E55 breaks traction most of the time, even in the dry!
If you must go wider to guard your alloys, I'd agree with V8 HSV & not exceed 245.

On my smart I run 215/35/17 which has 8.5" rims, brilliant set up, tyre nicely stretched on to rim for excellent grip/handling
I should imagine that 215/35/17's contain 600cc's worth of smart power quite nicely.
Werent Smart cars set up to understeer so as to not topple over though?

This is way "Off Topic" but I'm driving my Smart today for the first time in ages. With wider 15" Kahn alloys & F1 tyres the handling is really good fun. Kinda reminds me off an early 911, the way it requires setting up to corner fast. Hilarious, but not unstable at all, certainly doesn't feel if it would ever topple over. The weight of the engine is low down.
Back on topic, I'd stick with 235's on the front for fear of corrupting the beautiful steering feel of the HSV.

Well yes, the first ones came with 145 section front & 175 section rear on 15” rims & about 40-55 bhp varients, I run 195 front & 215 rear on 16/17” combo & twice the horsepower with 6-pot Tarox stoppers.
I have the 700cc Brabus engine with all the tweaks, produces a staggering 102 ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheels!
The smart never fell over in the slalom test but its bigger bro the A Class did so Merc went & retro fitted all stability/traction control progs to the smart & A Class from their C Class range, needless to say somewhat intrusive!
