Again probably a pointless observation that you'll already have spotted, but given the shutdown text is just ASCII codes, presumably instead of 4D 4F 4E 41 52 4F for 'MONARO', you could do 4D 6F 6E 61 72 6F for 'Monaro'?

Just like to feel involved smile

So, if I understand all this jibber jabber correctly, if you were to type in say 38DD 24 38DD I should get a busty blonde pop up on my cluster ?? biggrin

Got it all working guys with the cluster in the car. The EFilive cable didn't work but my £6.40 Arduino USB-Serial convertor did the job. I now have the Holden logo on startup, haven't had the car out yet to see if the shift light works, that's for later :-) Ferret I have the 10 default strings saved for you, if you let me know the other code you want saved I'll get that for you as well.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-to-TTL-converter-FT232RL-for-Arduino-PIC-/111043788878?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160

That's the USB-Serial adaptor I bought and it works, word of caution you'll need a soldering iron to attach the pins/wires when you first get it. Simply tied the RX/TX lines together and plugged them into pin 9 on the OBD port on the car and the GND port to pin 5.

BTW to make the com port appear on my windows 8 laptop with this I/f I had to go into the device properties for the usb-serial adaptor and turn on VCP in the advanced settings but not with my windows 8 desktop - weird.

Yes no need to remove it using this method. Maybe for some of the more advanced stuff ferret and the yanks are playing with it might be necessary but not for the basic stuff.

You are correct all the stuff we are doing is via the odb port. Although to make my life easier I have spare clusters rigged up on a bench so I can decode the clusters in comfort and not do it hunched in the can with a laptop squeezed on my lap.

Glad to here you managed to program the settings you wanted without issues and managed to find a cheaper cable than what I got but to be fair I could not be bothers with making my own at the time..

Ill drop you a message once im home about getting those tables off of you and sending you the code for the other table I want.

true but its the holiday weekend, the weather forecast is good, there will be a great crowd there and there's some good roads to play on. Isn't that reason enough to head up and get your dashboard done at same time? Even a few significant others along to keep each other company and enjoy a glass of vino or two while the rest of us talk car bolloks.....
