Ta, will whip it off later and have a look!
Please post back and let us know if the heating elements are there - would be very interested to know (but not quite interested enough to overcome my laziness to go have a look myself whistle )

Right guys, I whipped it out and had a look, on my 2008 VXR8 there is neither a heated element nor any additional wiring and it's a bugger to get the glass and motor mount back on the three housing ball and socket clips!

However, the glass appears to be simply held in place by a plastic lip that surrounds it so if you could find some universal heating pads I see no reason why you couldn't apply them to the back of the existing glass and wire them in. Something like these? Now by my rough calculations they are about 14cm X 8cm which is about the size of our mirrors diagonally speaking................and worth a punt at £8.80'ish for a pair delivered. Picking up a signal for the timed 12v rear demister should be easy and coupled with a relay we should be good to go! Of course what would be nice would be to find the loom in place on the door side of the wiring connector!

Stef

P.S I now have considerably better bass!

I just had a play with the things mentioned :-) one thing I cant find is the base controler on the amp behing the battery on left hand side in boot, does the R8 have a base knob that you can turn to up the base?

Out of interest, what is the recommendation to get the best out of the OEM setup? The advice i seem to see quite a bit is turn up the bass at the amp in the boot and disconnect the centre dash speaker?

cheers

Not heard of the dash speaker one? but def set up the sub amplifier in the boot, the control is hard to find unless you know where it is LOL wish I had taken some pics now.

Remove the boot liner on the left side, quite easy to do, and on the back of the amp is a smaller box about 80mm square, on the bottom of that box is a control knob that you can turn, it also has a central click possition, I found mine to be in between the half click and full base possition.

I found it easier to get in the boot with a torch, infact the boot is so big you could have an orgy in the back biggrin

I've turned my knob up to 3/4 and selected classical as my eq setting and I find that gives a pretty good all round sound.

I've heard about the centre speaker thing but have to say that was on the Chrysler 300C and not this car.

Centre speaker is a very simple upgrade: Disconnect it smile It's truly a horrible little speaker. Chances are the paper or sponge surround has disintegrated by now and whilst you cant hear it by itself, it will be distorting and buzzing.

I actually replaced mine, but for a different reason - My Sat Nav has an Audio out. So I fitted a small amp under a seat and connected a 3.5mm to phono lead to it. So when I want to hear my Sat Nav, I just plug it into the lead and the audio comes out of the centre speaker.

Old Vs. New:

Mick - I really want to hear your cut-outs smile

What speaker fits in where the dash speaker goes without any major mods?

I do like my cutouts biggrin I fitted them to my Ro and was really glad Donk had fitted them fitted biggrin there are certain times the cutouts work really well, like when your on the M/way in between 60 & above in top with light throttle, the burble sounds awesome!!!! reminds me of an SLS that past me last year, sounded so nice.

Well I can confirm that all of Gary's hidden features do work, although I recommend NOT entering Engineering Mode and telling it to perform a self-test whilst doing 50mph unless someone has already told you that you just press it again to exit self-test mode. whistle

LOL - I did that too and shat myself

Mick - I think mine was teh cheapest branded 4" co-axial (Alpine or JVC). I could find on ebay. I actually sold the second of teh pair on ebay (and advertised it as a centre speaker replacement) just make sure the mounting tabs are there - it doesn't really matter if you cant secure both sides, it doesn't really move about, but like I said, try it disconnected first, I think you'll be surprised.

Do the ohms matter on the new speaker?

No. there's such low power going through it. 4 by default, 2ohm will not cause a problem - in fact I can't remember if it was an 2.4 or 8 to begin with. It should say on the back (sorry, binned mine)

I think they are 2ohm as standard, so fitting a 4 ohm should not harm the head unit?

That much difference then? so does it improve the sound fitting a new speaker? or is it beter just removing
