VXR8 head unit - how to enable input?
Discussion
Following this with interest (and slight bewilderment as I'm not tech savvy).
CD Player has stopped working in my VXR8 and use an MP3 player into the front aux port. Would really like to keep all the wires hidden out of the way and to get the head unit displaying as a sat-nav/video from my phone would be a bonus.
Keep up the good work!

Feel free to ignore this if it's too off-topic, but is there a solution whereby I could just dump the whole head unit, and effectively just have a simple amplifier with a bluetooth receiver?
I only ask because as I'm lumbered with the Monaro unit, I have no aux input. Currently, I have an FM transmitter / bluetooth receiver in the centre console, and use the radio tuned to that with music from the phone. It's wireless, but of course, FM is pretty lacklustre quality...
I'm not too concerned about getting into audiophile territory, if I could just bluetooth straight to an amp that'd be fine for the odd time I use the stereo, and it'd probably save a few ounces of redundant CD autochanger...
My alternative is full double din 7" touchscreen wonderment, but given how seldom I use it, it seems excessive...

One thing I'd like to do is find out if it's possible to emulate the satnav unit and re-add that functionality. If GM used to fit an optional satnav unit in the glovebox, what's to say it couldn't be replaced / substituted for a Car PC?
Galaxy S2's can make use of a "MHL" adapter, it basically outputs the screen to HDMI (so you can plug it into your TV etc), the problem is that the fascia screen isn't HD, and even worse so, the video input is low quality composite input. I'd estimate the screen resolution (after all the conversion to PAL and back) would be around 320 x 240 pixels. That's 286 / 386 computing days resolution.
Can the head unit be replaced with just an amp and a bluetooth receiver? Yes but it'll be ugly as sin. If you're looking for a cheap solution, Aldi are selling some cheap and nasty single din bluetooth head units for about £50 that support Bluetooth Stereo.
Although this is a bit extreme, personally in that situation I'd hack Bluetooth support into the Monaro head unit, buy something like the Connects2 BTAV01 and install it inside the head unit, stealing power from it and outputting its audio directly to the CD player signal output (this will require a bit of circuit tracing and soldering) if you're not using the CD player.

Thanks for the info and sorry for sending the thread off track. I have already got one of the MHL adaptors for the S2 and it also requires a power source to work, just plugging direct into the phone isn't enough on it's own. Gassing Station | HSV & Monaro | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
