The tow company in question was known to pull crap like this.
There was no mistake, as another poster suggests, as it is a law that a car cannnot be towed without a representative who can provide proof of ownership [registration card].
And for a Brit to show such disrespect for a British-made car is very sad. The car was beautiful, unique, and worth money, hence the attempted theft.
On the other hand, just look at the car stolen from the original poster. How can you feel safe in such small cars?

The Jags with a straight-6 had twin SU or Zenith carbs mounted just above the exhaust manifold. I did see a few go up in flames. But the TR-7 twin carbs could only leak onto the ground. I actually rebuilt the Zeniths with better float valves and replaced the float chambers with ones that had no center plug that could leak.
