It's tyre time...

DB9... I know everybody says Bridgestone Potenza or Michelin Pilots, but I like to thrown the net a bit further.

I'm not looking for ultimate performance, nor do I want Tesco Value tyres, the goal is to find a reputable brand that will soften the ride and reduce road noise. And rim protection is essential. I've searched the internet until I got confused...

What have other people used on their DB9s (or similar)? Falken Azenis maybe?

Whether the following tyre is made in DB9 sizes, I don't know, but after years of putting up with far too much road noise, I fluked onto an extremely quiet tyre for my Mercedes daily driver.

Michelin Primacy 4.
Think there is a 5 now.

With my Vantage, awful road noise is not an issue, because those wonderful engine and exhaust sounds dominate, occasionally enhanced by James Bond on the Premium Audio.
Michelin Pilot Sport 4 on that car.

Contis have no rim protection. I run SportContact 6’s on my V8V

Just to be clear I'm not unhappy with the Contis - completely transformed the ride of my non-S V8V over 4-year-old Brickstones (that were already showing signs of cracking) but the Contis are a tad nosier over some surfaces.

But OP specifically said rim protection was a requirement

I've heard that there's now a Michelin Pilot 5 which is a more designed for everyday use rather than the 'Ring - can anyone confirm?

I had a look at Continentals but it looks like the sides curve in around the outer edges giving a rounded or 'track' look - or am I mistaken?

I had a look at Continentals but it looks like the sides curve in around the outer edges giving a rounded or 'track' look - or am I mistaken?

If you’re referring to Pilot Sport 5, as far as I am aware this version is the new tyre that Michelin produced in collaboration with AML for DB12 and will also be standard on new new Vantage. I haven’t checked but they may not be currently available in the smaller diameter/width sizes you’d require for your DB9. Personally I would tend to agree with MMarkM, and suggest you go for Michelin PS4S. I had a new set fitted to my car last year and I’m very pleased with them so far. Not sure about rim protection but the car certainly rides better and there is less road/tyre noise too. BRM.

Having said this I went with P4S about 18 months ago and have been very happy with them but I was coming out of some old and past it OEM spec Bridgstones.

Thanks again for the replies. The reason for the crashy ride with bad road noise is twofold - sportspack suspension and very old Bridgestones. I don't know which is contributing more... I can't change the suspension but I can change the tyres...! I assumed perhaps wrongly that new Bridgestones or Michelins - because everyone likes a 'sporty' ride - would be hard.

If rim protection is obviously important to you then Pirelli P Zero’s are perhaps worth a look.
I had them on my Vantage V12S and no complaints.
Also not a DB9 but on my V12 R8 it came with Michelin MPS4’s but post a puncture had to switch to the Pirelli’s ( in PZ4 guise ) as couldn’t get a replacement.
Road noise is a tiny bit more but rim protection is greater and general road holding and use I would say is pretty similar.
I have a full set of Michelins now in my garage to swop over but tbh happy to leave on the PZ’s.

I had an S-Type with Pirellii P-Zeros - and had more punctures and slow leaks with those than all my other cars put together. Here's what one did on the A12 at 70mph...

I put PS4S all round on my 2009 XK, not because I enjoy a harsh ride, but because I trust the PS4 lineage of tyres, having previously experienced the "lower" PS4 on my Type R. My partner has PS4 on her XF 3.0 TDV6 and is very happy with the grip and comfort levels of those too.

I've seen mixed reviews for the PS5, so I'm not sure what to go for myself once the PS4S get to the end of thier life, in the mean time, I'd seek them out while you can, they really don't have much in the way of competition.

I have the new Bridgestone Potenza Sports, which have modest rim protection of 8-10mm. I recall that the old Potenza RE050 didn't -or at least it was ineffective

Although the naming convention gets a bit confusing, I've put 4 x Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres on a 3 series last year. The difference between those and the MPS 4 that preceded them, adjusting for the fact that new rubber always feels better, is...marginal at best, whether in terms of noise, noticeable grip or fuel economy. Having said that, whether MPS 4 or MPS 5, it's a VAST improvement over the standard run-flats.

I'll probably be back to Michelin Pilots when I replace the wheels on my Vantage shortly (currently on aged Potenzas)

Other brands I've used successfully on other cars were Falkens and Goodyear Eagle - has anyone ever tried them on an Aston?

I have Michelin PS5 fitted to the Vanquish. Absolutely perfect tyre for the car. PS4S would offer marginally more grip and performance. But do I need that?
