Picked my new car up on Saturday smile, I was about to remove the tax disk from my old car as there was 5 months left (£435 per year)and the dealer said I had to leave it on as it was part of the deal. As I was excited about getting ther new car I did not argue but since then it has bugged me.

The dealer struck a very hard deal on my part ex but at no point said I had to leave the tax disk on it.

Every other car I have bought on a part ex basis I have always removed the tax disk and cashed it in, helping me pay the tax on ther new car.

On the grand scheme of the purchace of a £40K+ car its nothing so its more the principle.

Any views?

Shame that such a tiny amount of money can affect a future relationship. The dealer has ensured that all future dealings with you - servicing, part ex, new purchase - will be tainted in your mind. Aston dealers can indeed be slightly shortsighted on these things. If this happened in a supermarket and you returned an outfit smelling of deoderant and with a cigarette burn in it for a refund, they would immediately refund your money and pay your kids school fees. Proper customer service, as they understand it, is about LIFELONG relationships, not showrooms full of shiney shoes or smart suits that are often ill-fitting. Your future potential spend of tens of thousands of pounds has been jeopardised by a couple of hundred pounds - silly really.

Tell your dealer you are miffed and cheekily ask for an Aston Martin brolley.

If the dealer is worth his salt, he will send you 2.

A definite feck-off from me.

If it was not part of the deal, then it was not part of the deal. I can understand it's one of those things that you look back on and regret for not being stronger but just put it down to experience. Next time the tax disk will be in your pocket as you pull up to the dealership..

Yeah I would be miffed as well. Same problem in OZ, short sighted car dealers on every corner.
Well what Aston did you pick up on Saturday? And what's the impression of the vehicle so far?
BTW I notice the post level shoots up on a Monday morning when everyones at work toiling away. Sundays are obviously spent polishing and driving when the weathers good.

I can see both sides of the story but it's a pity the salesman can't be bothered to reply and explain his reasoning in writing. But he's got the dosh and salesmen uncannily lose all interest after that. I found that out last year when the aircon in the Jag I had just bought went pop on the way home and left me with a £500 bill. Hence he won't be asked to find me a DB7.

Spoke to the salesman today. He mentioned that they found a chip in the windscreen of the part ex car and if poss could I get this repaired through my insurance and they could refund the tax but I informed him that the insurance moved from the part ex to the new car so that would not be possible.

I find this a bit unusual way for dealers to work. In the past I buy a car, part ex my old car with scratches etc etc, they give a price, I remove tax disk, jobs done.

What I find strange is a dealer assuming that my old car would still be on my insurance.

I can see where this going, they are going to say because they found a chip on the screen they are not going to refund the tax. My view is they viewed the car and bid on based on the viewing and that’s that.

Thoughts?

One for experience I think - you shouldnt have handed the tax disc over and the moment you did I dont think you were ever going to see it again. I have been challanged a few times by dealers who spotted I had removed it and I just polietly but firmly say that I am keeping it as it wasnt part of the deal - dealers dont include free road tax on the sale and you shouldnt include it on your car as part of the part-ex unless specifically agreed either way. I usually offer to let them buy it off me for its remaining value, but so far every dealer has declined this offer!

I would walk away from the whole thing now - you wont get the cash back and you dont want to get drawn into the windscreen debate either. That was their risk for accepting the car when you dropped it off.

This isnt unique to AM dealers - I have experienced it many times in the past, including Porsche and Mercedes dealerships.

But he said the tax was not refundable even before they found the chip on the windscreen - and of course he had ample opportunity to inspect the car for damaage before doing the p/ex. So one of his staements must be a lie.

The fact he now says 'Well we would have given you the tax back but we've found a chip' smells like pure dodgyness to me. Like my post about a misleading advert, you simply don't expect this kind of Arthur Daley stuff from a prestige dealer.

To be honest I feel I just want to close the matter as its spoiling the enjoyment of the car so I have suggested, as someone earlier did above, that they give me a umbrella

Are we allowed to know which dealer caused this hassle? (I understand if you don't want to divulge this information) I noticed you're from the Tyne and Wear area.....

That last statement from the dealer is a terrible one to make. They took the car in it is no longer your problem. Almost using the tax refund (which really you should have just bloody taken anyway) as a bribe to get YOU to have a windscreen repair done... so petty!

I would cease dealing with them any longer, forget about that tax and enjoy the car, you won't be thinking of tax in a week or two when the sun is out, and let them sort the windscreen out that they failed to inspect properly. Do bugger all to help them and move on.

Name and shame as well please so I can make a note not to bother viewing their stock.

I could understand if youve just traded in a £5K car on a £8K car and things were tight...but an Aston Martin dealer behaving in this way ...well, they shouldnt be dealing in premium products in my opinion, if they want their customers to haggle over a windscreen chip repair FFS! ...what a joke

...certainly walk away, and take your service business elsewhere....jeez, what do they charge you on servicing...I guess if you turn up 5 mins late they bill you for it, or if you use 1L petrol extra in the hire car

Unless it was in writing in the terms of the part ex then the dealer bought the car, not the car + Tax.

Tell the dealer you will be coming to collect the tax disc and to have it ready for you.

Dont give them chance to argue or ask you to try and commit insurance fraud on there behalf.

That sounds like a useful bit of law to quote.
