Dunno about this poll... Might perpetuate the stereotype that Vantages have weak clutches and they don't really.
What if it was 'tyres died' instead, wouldn't it seem silly? The clutch is a consumable wear item. it is going to wear out, even if your name is Bogie... It will go at some point!
If it fails prematurely, and I would call sub-20k miles premature (Aston call sub-10k premature) then I'd tick the 'clutch died' box.
My DB9 clutch was replaced at 30k miles, didn't fail but the pedal was high and a Monaco trip beckoned, now done 7k very happily on the monstrous BR organic replacement.
The single plate in the Vantage is not as good as it could be (DB9/DBS has a twin plate so Aston have them, just a cost issue) but the average 30k replacement is the same as any powerful manual car I'd say. Same with brake discs, 30k seems the norm...

I think the fly off handbrake puts some people off, especially those new to the car, then they end up holding it on the clutch on inclines
same with reversing up hill slipping the clutch instead of letting it out and driving uphill...but of course reverse gear is quite fast so that can lead to bad habits too
combine with city driving and I can understand how a manual car can go through a clutch in 20K miles...

I've not had any problems with my ASM1 clutch. But then I regularly carry out the clutch learn and invariably put it in neutral if stationary for more than a few seconds. The secret with reversing seems to be patience; foot off brake and let the SS gradually get the car moving. As soon as you interfere with either throttle or brake, all hell brakes loose.
Incidentally, I asked an AM technician at a local dealership about how often one should perform the clutch learn, and his response was "oh, about once a year should be fine". Is it any wonder that people have bad experiences with ASM1 when the dealers can't even give proper advice.

Out of interest what were the symptoms when it failed?
Usual stuff really it just started slipping in higher gears. I instantly stopped using it and booked it in for a new one. They showed me the old clutch, it wasn't shot but wasn't far from it. The car had previously lived in London hence why it probably went early.Gassing Station | Aston Martin | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
