i`ll tell you what it is mate, this guy is obviously a social climbing type.why come across as a private plated "i want you to think i paid 110k for my car" gentleman when you can come across as mr. i want you to think i parted with 170k for my car.when you think about it it`s quite pathetic really.
Actually he isn't.......I really don't think he gives a toss. I have obviously met this guy a number of times.......He wears jeans and T shirts, never seen him in a suit......Don't recall seeing any jewellery.....not pretentious in anyway what so ever......definately not a 'look at me' kinda guy.

He just likes what he likes....can't really say more than that!

Just read Craigs post and just thought I would add this.....yeah bang on!

that just doesn`t make any sense to me.it`s like owning an e class merc and fancying the upgrade look of an s class so trying to morph the look of your current car.why try to make it appear "more"than it actually is??bottom line is you want people to think you are a bigger player than you actually are. this will probably open up another can of worms but i don`t see the point of private plates.yes everyone can say it`s got special meaning etc. and there are people from this school but the vast majority of people do it to hide the age of their car

sounds to me like its you viewing him as wanting to be a "player" which maybe says something about the way you view things. Its not like getting an e class merc and trying to make it look like an s class, its like getting an e class merc and thinking that AMG wheels might look nice on it. I'd say that given he has a db9 he is already a "player"

hardly the same though is it?? the car was bought by me as seen.hardly vulgar if you look at what were standard wheels on an 03 db7 to what were 03 vanquish wheels.i bought the car as an absolute minter and it didn`t even register with me that the wheels were not as factory untill i was told by the previous owner.
take your point that the merc analogy was skewed but i`m still a bit perplexed as to what you are trying to get at by me suggesting this guy might be trying to come across as a bigger player than he actually is is somehow reflective of my own personality.enlighten me.

it would appear that the disease of social climbing isn`t as rampant in sw london as it is up here in the north west!!it seems i do have a rather jaded view of society in general.

...and don't tell anyone but I've got a private plate on my V8V that is V12***

At least with the V12V coming out I can 'pretend' i've got the V12...!! I wonder how much they'd charge me for a new bonnet to make it even more authentic looking....

I understand where the guy is coming from. Before I made the decision that I am going to upgrade to the V12 Vantage, I looked at a number of options to improve my existing V8 Vantage. I love the car, but always felt the performance was disappointing. So I seriously considered options all the way from chipping it to supercharging it. I also thought about putting a body kit on it to make it look different.

Then I thought well maybe it would be more cost effective and give me a better increase in performance, if instead I bought a cheap DB9 with the color and interior I like and get its performance enhanced a bit and then put the Kann kit on it. Why? Because my personal opinion is the DB9's looks are a bit boring for me, at least vs. other Aston Martins. That way I would have improved performance and looks at a relatively lower incremental cost.

In the end I have decided to buy the new V12 Vantage, because it already has the looks and performance, but more to the point has the ride quality, breaks and stability to take advantage of the improved engine performance. And to me that is the key. All of the other options are suboptimal, even if cheaper. You don't improve the balance of the car to keep up with the engine improvements, not everybody will like the body kits that you put on - so you may struggle to resell, and finally you may just ruin the car (for instance supercharging the V8 could cause longer term engine issues).

But I absolutely understand where this guy is coming from. He is not a "wannabe" because he already has a DB9. He probably just feels he can get more from it without spending a small fortune for a new model. Its a balancing decision. I have come down on the other side of the fence however, and think he is making a mistake, but then I have had the benefit of some good advice from people who have some experience in this.

All of this thinking process is part of the fun of owning these cars. As the french say Viva la Differance!!

laughlaughlaugh

btw there was a spy pic of a V8V Roadster that had the looks of V12V but after checking DVLA it was a 4.7l - perhaps you will see AM making this as an option on the V8V and then perhaps the DBS look on a DB 9 wink
