An oil tank. It's towards the front of the engine bay in the V8V.
OK.

Soooo... I expect I'm being dense but why not put the dipstick there?

OP - BTW what was the solution to you being a tool?
Self awareness of my short comings. It doesn't stop it, just mitigates the issue ;-)

I haven't checked my oil yet, do I need to? The little oil can light has never come on so I thought it didn't need topping up. Don't do a lot of miles so maybe it lasts fine.

How can internal combustion engines be so complex confused I'll stick with jet engines, they're much simpler really.
yikes
Runs a mile - if you are ever selling it!
May only be a humble (ex) IT Engineer, not jet engine engineer, but even I have worked out how to check and top up the oil BEFORE it starts warning you. Even the other half - Aston Annie on here knows how to do it.

Lubrication, got to ensure they are always nicely lubed up before thrashing and abusing them

At least I is down wiv the kids woohoo

I knew it had to be warm if I was going to drain it, not for checking it though! I topped it up on my SL I had before and that was fine.

How much oil will it use in 1800-2000 miles? It gets topped up every time it goes for a service, so shouldn't be that bad?

Oh FFS, what is it with the youth of today?
Sorry George, not you personally so much but just had to fire my 21 year old nephew today, really not feeling down with the youth today.
Manual / dealers will tell tell it may need a litre every 1000 miles. So by the time you take it back to dealer for a service the engine will be dry.
Please tell me you don't work on the Emirates A380's - I fly on them a few times a year! wink

PS please check your oil regularly. All cars need it - try owning wankel engined cars, you learn VERY quickly the need to check oil

When my car comes back from being repaired, I shall check the oil biggrin

I personally am not involved with the A380 engines (RR Trent 900) but I know the people who are, well they make the panels that become the blades after they are welded/blown with argon/twisted/polished, at the very front of the engine.

Ah well. Next time get a shorter dipstick. It'll save on weight too...

yes Unless it's outside the car holding it biggrin

You always need to run up the engine first on a dry sump system. The oil galleries in the engine and the (more shallow) sump pan still hold oil. Running it up allows for this and gives you the true operating level. The reason you don't in a wet sump is that it all flows to the sump pan eventually anyway. The dipstick dips into that pan so you know what's what.

On some cars, you have to leave the engine running whilst looking in the tank. Oil weighs a lot, and not carrying more than you have to can make a difference.

Yeti, if I could have deciphered your post it would have saved me all the bloody research.

So the dry sump system only applies to the V8 engines.

The DB9s, V12Vs, DBS's, Rapides, Virages and any other V12 engine you can think of are wet sump so are checked like normal cars.

This explains a lot smile

That's the whole point Mr K - I've never had to put oil in it in the 15 months I've owned it, though Rick obviously changed the oil in March.

Everytime I check the oil it is full and it is golden brown.

Perhaps I'm not driving it hard enough ?? smile

I will confess to only just going to check my oil however...

It's been 7,000 miles since the service 9 months ago

And following the procedure it comes up to about 1cm short of the Max line which I believe is just under 1/2 litre of oil short of Max; being about 6cms between Min and Max that claims to be a difference of 2 litres.

Is that unusually little?

Not for mine it's not. Didn't use a drop in 6,000 miles. And I do check mine regularly just to make sure there is enough oil even though it hasn't used any so far.
