DB9 - A gentleman's express. Effortless pace, class and positively oozing sophistication and knowledge of fine wines, art and literature. The world's finest GT car and winner of GT1 at Le Mans with its racing derivative.

Vantage - Essex boy 'done good' track day car for those who couldn't afford a Ferrari but were far enough up the evolutionary tree to know that a 911 doesn't make you any friends.

What you really need is something with the effortless power and glorious soundtrack of the V12 engine but with the sportier drive of the Vantage.

If only there was something perfect like that available biggrin

I know this has been said before but another way to look at this is:

DB9 - lovely car to enjoy your twilight years as you wind down from retirement to the grave. Plenty of room for pipe, slippers and the post-it note to remind you why you got in the car in the first place. Nice auto-box to allow you to avoid the aches and pains in your bad leg from using a clutch.

Vantage V8 - stylish sports car for the younger gentleman (or lady) - no sexism needed in this forum. Typically driven by those who appreciate the balance and performance but don't want the "coffee-bean handshake" offered to owners of Pork or require the gentlemens appendage enhancement offered by Italian machinery and are not dull enough to buy something with four rings on the front. Or a Jaguar.

Vantage V12 - see Vantage V8 but turned up to eleven. But please warm up the tyres before you spank it or else you'll discover how Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tyres have stuff all grip when cold...

Enjoy some test drives!

My DB9 is a manual. And I'm 36, I wish I was retiring...

Nice analogy John smile

My Mother-in-Law has noticed I use the Aston a lot more than my 911. Love coffee, not the handshake though biggrin

Are you looking at 4.7 V8V's or 4.3's? The 4.3 is slightly slower than the DB9, but the 4.7 will be very close. The seats in the DB9 are next to useless for anyone over the age of 5. I don't run one as a day to day car, but there are people who do, so I can't see why not as long as it is properly maintained.

Based on various magazine's road tests, the 4.3 V8V is at least as quick as the (heavier) DB9 (the up-to MY08 version) up to about 70 or 80 mph, after which the DB9 has the advantage. However, the 4.7 V8V is quicker than the DB9, and is nearly as quick as a DBS until well over 100 mph, after which the DBS's hp advantage starts to become much more apparent. This is, of course, standing start acceleration through the gears. The DB9 has MUCH more torque, especially at low and mid-rpm, than a 4.3 V8. The 4.7 is a lot torquier than the 4.3, but still not as torquey as a DB9. So, a 4.7 V8 is quicker, but you have to work at it harder.

Captain Slow said the DB9 has a whiff of old fart about it. There could be some truth in that as this old fart loves his DB9 and will keep it as long as he can still get in and out of it. cool

Was the DB9 the car they put in the sub-zero category on the cool board or something like that ?? I can never quite remember the exact details.

Or was it the V8V that Clarkson described as the most beautiful car ever ??

My memory is not what it used to be smile

I'm surprised you found the gtr too hard,I've driven 3 and had no issues with the ride or the way it drives.
In terms of performance, handling and overall dynamics the astons are quite away behind the gtr, although looks and character wise they are miles ahead.
You need to drive them and in various specs as well as if you found the gtr too hard I would think you would find a sport pack equipped vantage too hard.
If running costs are a major issue I would look at 911s or r8s as they are very cheap to run for the type of car they are.
