Alternative key fob.... What do you think?
Discussion
Been a few discussions about having a nicer keyfob for the older cars so i spent a bit of time trawling ebay for Jag / Volvo / Ford keyfobs on the basis it would be a shared part. The Jag XK unit is a perfect match and you just need to swap the internals over. It has Jaguar on the back but since mine is an LM i decided to cover it in red film to match the interior.
But now I'm not sure. Pics show the two units side by side.....

This pic shows the Aston circuit board the the jag body. Maybe a mm wider but still just clips in. Was a very easy job and I'd hazard even a yeti could do it. So that will be the last of the cheap units on eBay. Make sure it had the key as well because that locks inside unit (that's the alloy bit I attached the leather to).
Taking the Aston unit apart doesn't destroy the leather. It's what you have to do to change the battery so in the owners manual.
Problem with any fob that doesn't have the same number of buttons is that the circuit / buttons will not line up. I did spend ages searching for a newer flip key design but couldn't find anything that looked a match. If anyone can find a jag xf flip type key, maybe that could be converted to the round Aston key. Pretty sure I did look and couldn't find anything but since I drive a DB9 I may be a bit old and have forgotten.

Oh, excellent idea! Now I have to see if I can have metal parts of the ECU replaced with wood!! Much nicer looking, wouldn't you agree?
DB9 owners could change the red button from sounding the car alarm to an alert for their carers that they are in trouble, perhaps fallen over or the colostomy bag needs emptying ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)
