General Impreza Advice
Discussion
Hey. I'm 20, insured in my own name. Currently I drive a 1.8 MGF (nob-vvc). It's got 51k miles on the clock. I paid £2800 for it in September.
I am thinking of selling it at the start of summer. I estimate if I get lucky I could manage around £3300 for it.
I want to put that money, and another few grand that I wil save, towards an Impreza but I've only just started considering the Impreza and so have done very little research on them and haven't even got an insurane quote yet. It must be a turbo, really not interested in the old non-turbo models.
What advice can you give me? From what to look for, insurance...pretty much anything to do with them.
Cheers.

Yeap I know insurance will cripple me but I'm prepared to pay it as I'm working full-time and should be able to make ends meet.
When I sell the MG I'll have one years NCB on my own name...could have another year on top of that if I hadn't gone under my paerents name for the first year.

Yikes! With 1 years NCB
I've just sold an Impreza WRX, I was 25, living in a decent area, car on the drive, with TRACKER - no points, no accidents and 3 years no claims. I was paying just over £1200.
I decided to sell as the running costs, particularly the insurance, where not in line with the performance. It just wasnt quick enough to justify it. You can go a lot faster for a lot cheaper.
I'd be surprised if you could even get quoted on an STi.

What would you get then if you were in my position? I've always had a thing for scooby's and whenever I consider other motors they just don't do it for me like the subaru's do HOWEVER like I said I've done little actual reasearch on them and so I might be being slightly ignorant.
Cheers.
Do some further digging, perhaps get a few quotes. My experience of teh Impreza is that it only cost so much to insuer not becuase of the performance but from the theft aspect.
I'm sure other Impreza owners will be along shortly to add their 2p.
If i was in your position, for your budget, I'd be looking at MR2 Turbos, Celica GT4's and 200SX's. Still not cheap, but a bit more reasonable IMO.

I too looked at an Impreza, but decided to get a Celica GT4 instead (dont own anymore) as they are much cheaper to insure and rarer.
I figured the money I saved on insurance every year (about £600 ) could go toward tweeks etc
But I too sold it as I didn't feel like performance was worth the amount of fuel it used

20 yrs old with 1 year NCB to insure Impreza? i think most insurer will be laughing. I am 27 with 5 years NCB and own WRX PPP and cost me £600 for FC insurance. Fuel is other thing to consider, as it do drink alots !! like thirsty camel.
As someone said that Sillycar (Celica) GT-4 will be cheaper to insure and he is correct.

My Impreza costs double what my TVR costs to insure. The T&C's of both policies are the same.
Be prepared for a very big insurance bill, if you can find anyone to quote at all. You may well get quotes of £3k & upwards.
UK spec ones are cheaper & easier to insure, but obviously less performance as standard.
BTW, I had my first Impreza when I was 22 with 3 yrs NCB, so it is possible to get them when you're young

I wouldn't say the impreza is honestly worth a massive premium. Good though mine is I only bought it because I wanted the speed but needed enough room for the kids, 4 doors and carry capacity for kayaks. If I could have got a room rack for a celica gt4 I'd have had that instead.

I am 24, living in a decent area, car on drive, but no tracker, no immobilizer, no alarm, 1 accident (no claim) and NO NCB. Getting quotes of £700 on a cossie Merc - i.e. a 202bhp 1300kg car (broadly similar to a WRX?) and with rear wheel drive too, which you might think makes it a bit less safe.

I bit less safe, but a lot less attractive to theives (no offence intended of course) .
That said, that seems like an excellent price for anyone with 0 NCB!
The best thing with insurance is to join Scoobynet, alot of insurance companies that are sponsors on there do discounted rates, granted it might not be much but it helps.
Running costs can be a pain in backside, especially if you service them every three months or so like I do. On a side note, I would've said its personal preferrence, I had the choice of just about any performance jap car (within my price and insurance range) but chose the Impreza because it was the only one I liked. I know theres cheaper cars out there with just as much excitement but its whatever car you like to look at too.
I'm not talking about Skylines etc, thats my next car eventually.

Im 20, 21 in July, and the cheapest quote iv gotten with 0 NCB and a 4k own fault right off of an MX5 in Jan this year is £2.3k, been driving since 17. If anyone can find me fully comp insurance on a 5k tubby Scooby for under £1400, if I take it out, ill give a 10% finders fee, but lets face it, this isn't guna happen.
My last impreza was 480 quid with a tracker and 6 years NCB (also locked garage in a nice area helped). My current impreza with PPP has topped the grand mark. However it's a brand new car so that's not surprising. Personally I'd leave the impreza till you have a bit more NCB and age on your side.
Is it worth it for the performance? Well in my case the insurance works out at £3 per BHP. Bargain!
