It should be twin entry turbo. Does the salesman know what a turbo looks like? Does he know what a turbo is, beyond the brand of aftershave he bathes in every morning?

While you're here Umar, whats your 0-60 and 0-100 (on private land of course) It's still standard isn't it?

Well the official figures are:

  • 0-60 mph: 6.2

  • 0-100 mph: 16.5

  • 1/4 mile: 14.7 @ 94.3 mph

Thats all running at standard boost @ 8 PSI for a Rev 1. Rev 3 onwards i think they run @ 9/10 PSI ?

I havn't taken my car to a drag strip or track day or anything as i am still learning the OUTER limits of the car.

There is one MR2 that i have read about thats pretty quick

You planning to get a tubby?

Yup. The 3rd Gen 3S-GTE gets a twin entry turbo.

Thought the 3rd Gen in later 3S-GTEs ran more boost than that.

The lump in my GT-Four runs to 14psi in 3rd gear or higher.

Fuel mappings to 17 in the stock ECU. Mmmmm. Boost controller.....

Those figures are for the emmsions strangled US turbo, the Jap spec cars were quicker (0-60 in around 5.6 ISTR).

I hate those dodgy salesmen that lie.
I called up an ad for a "UK MR2 Turbo" a while ago.

I could see by the photo it was not an import and it also had no mods.
I've done my research when it comes to MR2 Turbos.

On the phone. (TSM = twat sales man)
ME: So is it an import?
TSM: No its a UK car
ME: and its a turbo?
TSM: yes it is
ME: Is it a standard car, any modifications?
TSM: no it is standard
ME: You sure its a turbo
TSM: (long silence) ...urm, well it says turbo on the back
ME: and it has a turbo in it?
TSM: urm...yes.

What a bloody waste of time and space these dodgy salesmen are. They just lie and have no clue of cars at all.

Im not downing all sales people. Most are very good.

Also, so many MR2s are advertised as "twin turbos".
If they would just lift the bonnet cover and read the bloody writing they would see it says "twin ENTRY turbo". A different thing all together.
Perhaps these people never lift the bonnet cover!

other questions to ask "do you know what a turbo looks like?" "do you realise 'turbo' is not in reference to your preferred choice of aftershave?"

ISTR?

Yanks turbo has 200bhp +170ft/bs and have the disadvantage of 1320 kilo's (manual) and nearly 1400kg for an auto. info from international owners manual, but doesn't say why they are soooo heavy.

ISTR = I seem to recall

The manual gearbox weighs a silly amount so I can well imagine the auto being even heavier. Maybe they quote the cars weight with the average American driver in

DustyC - I know how you feel, when I went looking for a turbo MR2 3 years ago the amount of sales lizards that just lied through their teeth, even while I was stood infront of the car was just unbelievable. Your right, they know less than nothing about cars, and even less about the ones they are trying to sell.

Umars times are correct for the US spec cars, and considering UK fuel is alower octane than Jap fuel 200bhp is a more realistic target for an early Turbo running in the UK. (ive seen this proved on rolling roads with at the wheels figures)

I used an AP22 to measure my times befroe and after I moddified the boost and Airfilter. -i guess its open to question as to the accuracy but anyway-

Pre mods, 0-60 6.0 was the best I could manage and a standing 1/4 of 14.1 @ 99.5

After upping hte Boost to 1bar (14.7psi) 0-60 went down to 5.8 and 1/4 came down to 13.9 @103mph.

However, anyone who has tried to get times from their cars knows how hard you have to hammer a car to get those times out of it!

The main thing for me when I upped the boost was the in gear response, just great, 3rd was ballistic.

BTW, the engine manual I had (in fact stil have somewhere) states healthy boost for the 3sgte as 7.8 - 11.2 psi (7 point something to 11 point something anyway)

American cars are generally heavier due to the extra crash protection requirements.
US versions of European/Jap cars usually have large bumpers to house the RSJs they fit to them for protection.

Californian ones will be very slightly heavier and perhaps less powerful again due to the extra emissions standards for that state.
