I find it hard to take a forum section called "Jap Chat" seriously. That's why I don't spend too much time here. I know others who feel the same.
You're not forced to use the site and you're free to leave at any time. By virtue of the fact that you don't spend much time here questions why you'd want the site changed so that you can use it more.If it's not broken, don't fix it.
And it's not broken.
It seems all the more forced when it's a sub-forum of the 'Japanese Cars' section.

Fair points but are you genuinely offended by it? Really?
On balance, I'm more disappointed in it than anything else. I feel we Japanese car and bike fans could do better. But with half my family being Japanese, you could say that I've got an iron in that fire.Generally speaking, I find old Japanese cars don't tend to get the respect they (arguably) deserve. The abbreviation of Japanese often seems to be a symptom of that.
To the people who seem to want to keep the 'Jap' abbreviation: Can I ask why? Do you really like it, or do you just object to perceived PC-ness?

As I said, times have changed. When the split was done, PH was under different management.
I am under the impression that forum splits cannot be reversed which is why I have closed the Porsche thread as the aim of it, to the best of my knowledge, cannot be achieved.
bks, if you want to merge the you can, even if it means manually moving each threadI am under the impression that forum splits cannot be reversed which is why I have closed the Porsche thread as the aim of it, to the best of my knowledge, cannot be achieved.

Thanks for the honest reply. I do disagree though. It's clear that old Japanese cars are starting to gain quite a bit of recognition as genuine classics! That is regardless of the abbreviation they are often labelled with.Generally speaking, I find old Japanese cars don't tend to get the respect they (arguably) deserve. My personal connection with 'Jap' is a friends club called 'Passion Jap'. For me it's obviously connected to good memories of friends and cars and good times. It's a great way to spend my Friday nights at the Passion Jap meets. I guess each and every word in the English language could mean different things to different people.

Don't mind me. I'm just drowning, not waving...
No, you're not. There are others who feel the same, but generally can't be bothered to argue. As you say, it's more disappointing than offensive. "Jap" is a pretty innocent term in casual UK conversation but it doesn't do much for PH's credibility to have an entire forum named this way.
Still, if we don't like it we can go somewhere else, and judging by the traffic in these parts, most people do.

I guess I'll now be reminded that this is a UK-based forum, and we shouldn't worry what it means to 'them'...

I have no issues with being called a white guy or brit. And I hope that a Japanese person on a Japanese classic car forum based in Japan and not feeling the guilt of calling their board brit cars just in case it offends 1 of us.

We are not at war with Japan anymore. Japan is friends with the UK, and we with them. And since I'm a fan of old Japanese cars, I prefer to demonstrate my positive feelings by writing the words 'Japan' and 'Japanese' in full. It's not really that much of a hardship, is it?
I find it hard to believe that anyone who is an enthusiast of Japanese cars and/or bikes, and has had direct contact with Japanese people, would use the term 'Jap' to a Japanese person's face or within their earshot. If you came to my house, would you call my wife a "Jap"?
I do find it interesting that some people seem so eager to hang onto the abbreviation. For me it's a no-brainer not to use it.

By the same token you presumably are entirely comfortable with the concept of a US-based site establishing a forum entitled "P**i Chat".I have no issue with what a US site does as it's not up to me
Any way it's good to chat and get peoples views on different things on here.
if the owners of PH wish to change Jap chat then it's not up to me. it's not my site. but I gather they have look into if it needs changing if it upsets the majority.
But we digress, lets hope the forum does not get split

Well. My eyes have been opened.
My friends and I have been openly saying that we drive 'Jap' cars for years on forums like this and in the street.
Who could have known that in all that time we have been inadvertently insulting millions of people who come on pistonheads not expecting to find a motoring forum. You almost couldn't make it up.
I suggest a petition and perhaps a strongly worded letter to the organisers of Japshow and Japfest as they are in fact car shows and not cultural meetings and might mislead some tourists to this island.
Well since the question's been raised, "Oriental" is a pretty old-fashioned term, not offensive (but certainly "quaint") when applied to vases or food, but not a great word to apply to people.
As with "Jap" it has to do with historical connotations, also it carries a strong whiff of "they all look the same you know".
