Nightmare evening!

Picked car up at 7ish knowing that until it's mapped it won't rev past 3k as the secondary injectors will drown the spark. No problem. Drive down to the monthly pub-meet near Dartford and car dies pulling into the car park.

Clouds of smoke and a very strong smell of petrol. Bit of a panick, grab extinguisher and open bonnet. Just smoke, no flames. Wait until t few others turn up and push car to a safe spot. call guy who did the work.

2 hours later the offending piece of fuel hose was replaced - original part, completely perished and jetting fuel about under the plenum.

Battery had also died (which is why it cut out int he first place) so we popped a spare he had in and all was well.

Head home after some food and a quarter mile from home car dies completely. Lots of battery but suspected flooding. Call a mate, tow car back to my place. New battery now dead from attempting to start it. Electric window stuck open. Feck.

Dig around in shed and find battery-powered jump starter. Almost no charge but was enough to get the window up.

Spent a sleepless night expecting the alarm to go off as it really doesn't like low battery power.

So far have managed two (failed) journies of 20 mins. Have to make a 3 hour trip next week to get it mapped. That'll be relaxing.

Still, looks brilliant - intercooler right in your face looks great!

That's true. Was feeling pretty down about it last night but my better half was mega-supportive and I'm feeling better about it now. Just a little bit of an anti-climax.

Is this the V-mount fmic, that I've been hearing so much about? -very envious.

Nope, fairly standard FMIC with aircon and rad behind. The FMIC is mounted right in the mouth and is very prominent. Looks like it's going hunting for small cars to eat.

FMIC and rad have been custom built by Brise Motorsport and the real target is to go single-turbo later this year (GT 35/40 or similar).

The I/C was designed to have little pressure drop and decent flow so enough air gets to the rad.

Ended up discarding the v-mount (intercooler/rad arrangement) as it doesn't fit well with thetwin turbos I'm stuck with at the moment...

Bet your glad you've lost that poxy stock intercooler!

Definately. Really not sure but I suspect that it lost me a good 8-10mph at VMAX8. The extra boost should be good for another 8-10 Should see 170 next time out...

Just remembered... must book in for our club's track afternoon @ Brands

I thought you were almost reving out in 5th last time out?

Nope Revs were high but the shift buzzer wasn't happening so less than 7k - that's a whole load left. Should top out around 170 for the gearing though depending on rev limit and mine's a bit higher than standard (by 200 rpm).

Big single turbo (T88 etc) and an auto diff and 185-190mph is not too distant but you'd need careful consideration on the aero side.

Head-to-head but Gaz and I managed 153 at VMax 8 although it was stupidly hot and I was seeing intake temps of 77C!!! (hence Gaz's comment about the silly stock intercooler).

Realistically though I'll be happy to top 160 next time out.

I went for a V mount in the end but at the expense of the air con and some boot space for the relocated battery...

Battery relocated but I'm keeping the aircon dammit! I'll post the full spec and dyno sheet in a week or so but, apart from the bespoke nature of the intercooler and rad, it's all pretty standard mods really

I must say the quality of the fabrication and fitting is brilliant and makes up for the wait and (minor) hiccups.

Well, it's mapped an dall the bits are sorted (clutch etc) and I'm picking it up in the morning...

294rwhp at 0.9 bar boost. I'll post up a graph when I get home tomorrow.

For those who care and have a good memeory the previous rwhp figure (taken just before VMax 8) was 293rwhp. Turns out the tuners made a bit of a mistake with their dyno and the positioning of the temp sensor. Rather than reading the air temp at teh intake they were reading it post intercooler. This then led to the dyno making a power correction based on this temp and inflating the power figures. In real-world terms it was putting out some 30-40, poss more, less before this work.

Result.

Drive home was fun. Not.

Torrential rain and loony drivers on the M25. No aircon at the mo so kept steaming up. Even in low boost setting it was being an evil biatch and kept trying to kill me. Nice to have it back

No dry weather yet and the new clutch is a) very heavy b) on/off - the bite point is covered by about 5mm of peddle travel! Clutch upgrade, 5.1 fluid (shared with the breaking system) and braided clutch line makes everything feel nice and tight. Feels like a new 'box too, not sure why that should be!

Need a dry day to start getting comfy with it again before I can relax behind the wheel. Will take a photo of the dyno sheet tonight (haven't even looked at it myself yet!).

how good is the airflow to your filters?

What's not in the pic is the cover that sits on top of the rad stopping air going over it. Ideally I'll add side plates, at least one to the RHS of the setup to force more through the rad. I may leave the left open to allow mostly unmolestedd air into the intakes.

An alternative is to remove teh driving lights and duct air from there... That would also allow me to mount a towing eye for track usage from that point.

As it is, even on the dyno the setup was bringing charge temps right down - pretty close to ambient! I'll do some on road logging once I get a dry day and also see what it does on track on the 11th.

That's at the wheels folks.

Peak power nice and early at 0.9 bar boost. Running the twins in non-sequential means they don;t pick-up as nicely as a medium single would but it's very driveable. I can keep in the fat part of the torque curve for track use and it shouldn't trail away as the boost wasn't holding on the dyno...

I must admit, I dont fully understand RR readouts

Simple really

The solid line (the one that starts higher) is torque and is measured against the left hand scale.

Tho other, dotted, line (that finishes higher) is power, measured against the righ hand scale.

The bottom scale is RPM.

Useful for deciding where/how to get most from the torque available - i.e. where to change gear/what band to keep revs in for maximum go.

Edit: I should be able to get pretty decen accleration from about 4500/4600 rpm and change gear round 7500 - no need to red line (8200rpm) unlike the previous map to get the most out of it.

Nice 'organic' curves on the graph, imo

Thanks. the intercooler is a Brise custom jobbie and is a decent depth as well. At least 4 times the cooling surface of the standard and actually gets some air in that position.

When it goes proper single (rather than re-plumbed twins) the torque curve should be similar but will not go convex between 2700 and 4700 rpm

Okay... so a brief note of the car now I've had a play in the dry.

First time I floored it in 1st I nearly pooped myself, Petra let out a squeal of fear (nothing like the VBH orgasmic power squeak). That was in low-boost setting. The e-boost has three settings and it defaults to #1 - low boost. #3 is high-boost.

2nd gear, completely dry, high-grip tarmac = wheel spin to 80mph.

I'm starting to get the hang of the new 'extreme' clutch, as it beds in the bite point is getting friendlier although the peddle pressure is not traffic friendly.

Checking the boost stability - spot on. 1.1 bar in high boost on a pull through 3rd gear. The dyno power run was peaked at 0.9bar and, as expected the boost holds out on th road rather then dropping off as it did on the dyno. Real power is somewhere over 310rwhp at least.

The air temps are nice and low - 25-35C under load which is awesome. Again better temps than acieved on the dyno. Water temps rock steady at 89-90 under load and in traffic.

Only thing that needs sorting is the seat - had a recaro runner installed and there's about 1" movement in the system under breaking which is very off putting! Not the set-frame or frame-floor bolts so must be the actual mechanism.

Track day on the 11th @ Brands and the Valley hoon on the 22nd... top banana!
